A lot of events that take place in Horizon Forbidden West are connected to Horizon Zero Dawn as Aloy struggles to shut down HADES. The Shadows From The Past quest line throws us right into conflict between Aloy and her past as we fight to prevent HADES from being brought back.

Shadow From The Past Guide

To get the Shadow From The Past quest in Horizon Forbidden West, you need to have reached Barren Light in the campaign. Once you are at the stage, you will receive a new side quest from one of the prisoners in the quest area. Talk to the prisoner Conover and you will get access to the new quest.

Once the quest starts, you will have to head to a marked location on the map. Use your focus to see all of the objects that require further investigation and follow the trail. After examining the area, you will notice that there are some branches up on the left side and you will be able to track down the culprits. Keep following the footprints across the river until you reach the machines that block your way.

Fight your way through the machines or you can sneak past them as there is no timer on the mission. You will eventually run into an injured machine with blood on it. Aloy’s voice line will hint that someone escaped the machine nearby and is injured. Use your Focus to track the enemies again and you will run into some human enemies.

Deal with the cultists who engage you in combat and you will find Rayad’s corpse. Take his Eclipse mask as proof of his death and talk to Conover. Once you finish talking to Conover, the quest will be complete and trigger the next quest “Shadow in the West”.
