Hogwarts Legacy brings RPG elements into its magical open world, featuring a variety of fully upgradeable gear sets. So, as you pick up different pieces of gear from its highlands, you’ll realize there are Upgrade Slots and Trait Slots, where you can apply handy upgrades and Traits. However, while upgrading and Transmogging gear is simple, the same can’t be said when applying Traits – a totally different mechanic.

In fact, the Trait mechanic in Hogwarts Legacy is often overlooked by players due to its complexity. This still doesn’t change the fact that the mechanic is central to your playstyle and completing Hogwarts Legacy since you’ll need to utilize it as enemies get stronger in the game. Therefore, we’ll be using this article to explain everything about applying Traits in Hogwarts Legacy to cruise through difficult missions.

How to apply Traits in Hogwarts Legacy

If you’re brand new to Hogwarts Legacy, the chances are you don’t know how to apply traits. Well, firstly you’ll need to unlock them. We’re going to talk you through how that’s done first before we move on to actually applying them.

How to unlock Traits in Hogwarts Legacy

Before you can even start thinking about applying Traits, you’ll need to complete some essential tasks, i.e. quests. You are required to complete the two quests below before you unlock Traits.

  • The House Of Requirement
  • The Elf, The Nab-sack, and The Loom

For most, this begins after putting in 10-12 hours in the game. As such, there’s no need to be overwhelmed by the upgrade slots and the Trait slot currently lying empty in your gear until you make it past these crucial quests.

Applying your Traits to gear in Hogwarts Legacy

Completing the former quest unveils the Room of Requirements, while the latter involves conjuring the Enchanted Loom in the Room of Requirements. The Enchanted Loom is the workstation for upgrading and assigning Traits to gear. Once you summon it, simply interact with it, and it’ll open a new window.

Since we’re applying Traits to gear instead of upgrading it, select the gear to which you’re equipping a Trait, and you’ll see a list of all the Traits you’ve unlocked. All that remains is to pick one and then apply it. However, each Trait will require specific items, but generally, the requirements are as follows:

Trait tierRequirement to apply
Tier 11x Puffskein Fur
Tier 21x Diricawl Feather
Tier 31x Kneazle Fur

The best part is that a Trait can be re-applied to any gear as long as you have the required items. In addition, if you’ve looted new gear, some of these have already equipped Traits, and what you’ll have to do is use the Desk of Description to reveal their Traits and change them later on to your liking.

How do Traits work in Hogwarts Legacy?

Alongside upgrading gear in Hogwarts Legacy, players can apply Traits to their gear that bring unique stats, including offensive buffs to spells and damage reduction from certain enemies. You’ll mostly loot the offensive Traits from Collection Chests after clearing bandit camps, while the defensive Traits are unlocked after completing Combat Challenges offered by the school.

Traits are generally divided into three tiers: Tier I, II, and III. However, the catch is that you can’t apply Traits to every gear. Let’s show how it works just below:

Trait tierGear quality it can be applied to
Tier 1Superb (Blue), Extraordinary (Purple), Legendary (Orange)
Tier 2Extraordinary (Purple), Legendary (Orange)
Tier 3Legendary (Orange)

As you can see, as the gear increases in rarity, with Legendary being the best, the Trait tier than can be applied to it also increases. That means that Superb quality can only support Tier 1, while Tier 3 is reserved for Legendary quality gear. You may notice that two rarity levels are missing from this list – Standard and Well-Appointed gear. That’s because neither of these qualities can be upgraded with traits.

Should I wait before I apply Traits in Hogwarts Legacy?

It’s obviously a good idea to apply traits to the gear you’ll be using most. There’s a ton of gear available in Hogwarts Legacy, so you may find yourself waiting around to apply it to the perfect piece. Well, due to how the Tier system works, certain lower tiers of traits only work with certain rarities of gear – which means your choice is naturally restricted by this. We’d suggest saving your legendary gear for the tier 3 traits if possible.

Another thing to think about is replacing traits on gears. Right now it’s not possible to remove a trait from a piece of gear without overwriting it with another choice. It would be smart to avoid doing this as much as possible if you want a wider range of viable gear for different builds.

How to apply Traits in Hogwarts Legacy : Final word

That’s all there is to know about Traits and how to apply them in Hogwarts Legacy. While the Traits mechanic might be hard to get initially, it’s pretty straightforward once you get the gist of it.

So, once those two quests are out of the way, you can get to enjoying the Traits system right away and start customizing your gear to compliment your build.
