In the Harry Potter series, House Points motivated students to strive for excellence for the sake of winning the House Cup.

As such, even though this ambition is of no relevance (gameplay-wise) to Hogwarts Legacy, Avalanche Software made sure to weave it into the narrative for more authenticity.

So, if you’re interested in winning your House the House Cup by maximizing your House Points, then you’ve come to the right place!

How can you earn House Points in Hogwarts Legacy?

House Points are generally rewarded by teachers and professors in the game for multiple reasons, such as doing well in a particular class, lending a helping hand around the castle to different NPCs, or even doing challenges on the House grounds.

Furthermore, NPCs from different Houses will also be able to earn House Points for their House, so you will have to be a little competitive.

Conversely, teachers can also take away points from players as a punishment, as was seen with Professor Snape in the movies.

This particular mechanic plays a major role in players being able to snatch House Points from other NPCs in the game.

Taking House Points from other houses

Taking House Points from NPCs in the game is an important activity if you want to secure the House Cup for your House. You can do this by simply interacting with different NPCs, taking advantage to get them into trouble, and then deflecting blame to save yourself from losing any House Points.

One example is when you help Garreth Weasley make his potion during the Wiggenweld recipe class. This will lead to points being deducted from his House, and if you are able to tell Professor Black that you helped, you won’t have any points deducted from your own House.

Although you didn’t get any House Points yourself, being able to reduce the competition indirectly helps.

Being able to check your House Points keeps you informed of how much you need to work to catch up or maintain your lead over the other Houses.

To check your House Points, just head into the main reception area of the Hogwarts castle.

There you will be able to see four hourglass tubes against the wall between the Great hall and the Reception doors, each with a House crest placed upon it.

Simply put, the level to which your hourglass is filled is the number of points your House has as compared to the other Houses. So, all you have to do is make sure yours is filled the most (relatively), either by contributing to your own or depleting other House’s points.

Note: Unfortunately, at the time of writing, there seems to be a bug affecting the house point hourglasses. Though, hopefully this will be fixed in due time.

Hogwarts Legacy House Points : Final word

Hogwarts Legacy has certainly earned some of its well-established authenticity by introducing the House Points system in the game, which is necessary to win the House Cup.

However, even though the House Points do play some role in the overall story of the game, it’s important to remember that they are primarily a part of the lore.
