Sons of the Forest – how to host a server in multiplayer

We’ve got a quick and simple guide for you if you want to host your own server in multiplayer for Sons of the Forest. Just for reference though, right now, there is no way to port over a Single Player save to a Multiplayer server, so you’ll be starting afresh.

What you’re going to want to do first is go to the main menu of Sons of the Forest. From here, you’ll be able to see the following options:

  • Single Player
  • Multiplayer
  • Options
  • Exit

As you can see, what you’re able to do from here is move over the ‘Multiplayer’ option. Once you’ve done that, you can decide whether you want to join or host a server. For this tutorial, of course, you’ll be picking ‘Host’.

Following that, you can have the choice of continuing a previous game, or creating a new game. If you click ‘new game’, you’ll then be given a choice regarding the Sons of the Forest difficulty settings you can choose from, including Peaceful Mode.

After doing so, you’ll see a secondary set of options to choose from. You’ll be able to choose the amount of players, and who can join. If you want to play with more players, you’ll have to try setting up a dedicated server through Steam.

Alternatively, if you don’t want to play multiplayer there are more companions out there for you to team up with in Sons Of The Forest.

Are there dedicated servers in Sons of the Forest?

The dedicated server feature allows players to create multiplayer games that constantly run at their homes or through server providers, making it great for those who want to play co-op or PvP multiplayer with a bigger group of friends.

Endnight Games, the developers of Sons of the Forest, have neither confirmed or denied whether the game will include dedicated servers in the early access version. In The Forest, dedicated servers were added in update v0.59 as a separate tool that could be found under ‘Tools’ in the Steam library.

This may be the case in an upcoming update for the Sons of the Forest.

To check if Sons of the Forest has dedicated servers, players should follow these steps:

  • Open the Steam library.
  • Open the drop-down menu under ‘Home’ (which defaults to ‘Games’).
  • Check ‘Tools’.
  • Type ‘Forest’ in the search bar.
  • Check if ‘Sons of the Forest Dedicated Server’ is listed.
