The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, the long awaited sequel to the hit Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is finally here and fans are already deep in exploring the kingdom of Hyrule. New monsters, new abilities, and a new story are just some of the draws to the latest entry in the Zelda series.

Part of exploring the overworld means finding tons of wild horses, and Tears of the Kingdom, much like its predecessor, lets you catch those horses and make them your own trusty steeds. The sequel also lets you transfer over your horses from the previous game, which is great if you’re like me and are very attached to your favourite mount from Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

It’s very specific instructions though, so we’re here to tell you what they are.

How to transfer your horses to Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

If done correctly, you’ll have no trouble having your horses transfer over from your Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild saved data. Here’s how to do it:

  • Make sure your Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild save is loaded onto your Nintendo Switch before opening Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom – download it on if it’s not
  • Start playing Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
  • Beat the tutorial area, the Great Sky Island
  • Head to any stable
  • Your horses will be there for you to take out

There you go! All of your horse friends should be there for Link to ride around on, with the same stats and bond levels as before.

Note that if you don’t load your Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild saved profile before you open Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, you can’t get your horses to port over. At all. The game will never check for that data again. If you’ve already done that, your only option left is to delete your entire save file for Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and start over if you want your steeds back. That is not ideal, so have this ready before you begin!
