Since the release of The Witcher 3 next-gen update in the early hours of the 14th of December, lots of die-hard fans have probably been looking for an excuse to play again. The Witcher 3 PS4 to PS5 upgrade
The good news is the PS4 to PS5 upgrade for The Witcher 3 is absolutley free. If you’re in ownership of the base game or Game of the Year Edition, you can easily grab yourself the updated version.
If you own a digital copy, you will automatically get the upgrade for the PS4 version in your library, or alternatively claim the PS5 copy from the PlayStation Store.

The process for physical copies is slightly different. You must instead claim the upgrade and keep the disc. To upgrade an eligible PS4 game on disc to the digital PS5 version, you will need a PS5 console with a disc drive. So just keep your PS4 copy of The Witcher 3 in your PS5 to play.
Cross-progression and cross-saves between PS4 & PS5
In The Witcher 3 next-gen update, CD Projekt RED has also implemented a new online feature. This grants access to cross-progression and cross-saves. Essentially, this means that players will be able to access their Witcher 3 saves on earlier different platforms from the one they initially played on.
This means that progression from PS4 saves can be accessed on PlayStation 5 copies and vice-versa, making this upgrade to The Witcher 3 on PS5 as smooth as possible.

Is The Witcher 3 Next-Gen upgrade free?
The Witcher 3’s update is completely free for all owners of the Witcher 3, so PS4 owners can play the PS5 version, and Xbox One owners can play the Xbox Series X version. PC players will also be able to download the update at no cost.
Can I upgrade a physical PS4 copy of The Witcher 3 to a digital PS5?
Unfortunately, the answer for this is no, the digital PS5 will not accept this. You need to have a disk drive in order to play PS4 discs on the PS5.
