Long-time fans of the Harry Potter book and movie series have already been acquainted with the plethora of potions that were present in them. However, the Polyjuice potion, which Harry used on himself to look like Draco Malfoy in order to sneak into the Slytherin Dorms, holds a special place in our hearts.

Players will be glad to know that Avalanche Studio, the developers of Hogwarts Legacy, have included potions in their game. Even though the number of potions isn’t anything to write home about, each of the seven potions offers various unique benefits.

Let’s find out how you can use potions in Hogwarts Legacy, just like a true wizard would in their adventure.

How to use potions in Hogwarts Legacy

When you start the game, you’ll realize that you can’t use potions right off the bat. They have to be unlocked first.

Just follow these steps to use a potion to juice up your wizard.

How to unlock potions

It’ll take some time before you can get to unlock your first potion. Once you start a new game, your character will be tossed around in a handful of main and side quests, until finally landing on the thirteenth main quest, “Potions Class”.

Expect around 20-30 minutes of gameplay before you reach this quest. But that’s not a lot, is it? For us gamers, 30 minutes of gaming barely feels like any time at all.

In the Potions Class, Professor Sharp will introduce you to potions, and you’ll be able to brew your first one. This potion will automatically be added to your Tool wheel. After this, players can freely buy or brew potions from vendors.

Using the tool wheel

In order to use the first potions that you brew, or any other potion that you purchased from a shop, you’ll have to go into the Tool Wheel.

  • For console players, press and hold the L1 (PlayStation) or the LB (Xbox) button on your controller to open the Tool Wheel. From here, use your analog stick to select the said potion. Release the button to equip it. Press the same button once to use the potion.
  • For PC users, press and hold the Tab button to bring up the Tool wheel. Use your mouse to select the potion, and then just press Tab once to use the potion.

Wiggenweld Potion

The healing potion, which is called the Wiggenweld Potion, has slightly different controls than other potions. Because you’ll be using it more frequently, the developers have assigned it to a more accessible button.

  • For console players, press the Down button on the D-pad to use the Wiggenweld potion.
  • PC players will have to press G for the same function.

List of potions in Hogwarts Legacy

While seven potions aren’t a lot, each provides a unique impact on the gameplay. Here are all seven potions in Hogwarts Legacy:

  • Wiggenweld Potion: healing potion
  • Focus Potion: reduces spell cooldown
  • Maxima Potion: increases spell damage
  • Endurus Potion: increases defense
  • Invisibility Potion: turn invisible for a short time
  • Thunderbrew Potion: creates a damage-dealing storm around the player

Should I learn how to use potions in Hogwarts Legacy?

If you’ve not learned how to use potions in Hogwarts Legacy, then what are you waiting for? Potions play a crucial role in a successful Hogwarts Legacy playthrough. Most potions are massively useful during combat, with the ability to increase your damage, defense, or perhaps most importantly, restore some health. Although you naturally restore health out of combat over time, this is no use in the heat of battle. The invisibility potion on the other hand lends you some utility unlike the others.

So, now you know how to use potions, it’s time to make use of them. Perhaps you already have quite a few stocked up and ready to drink – you’re missing out on wasted potential if you leave them to gather dust in your tool wheel.

How to use potions in Hogwarts Legacy : Final word

Once you unlock the potions in Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll find yourself constantly using them mid-battle or immediately before them to start off with an opening gambit.

It’s important to know what each potion does, and the controls to use them so you don’t accidentally mix up the Wiggenweld potion with the Invisibility potion during combat.
