One of Blizzard’s most popular franchises, Diablo lets players battle skeletons, demons, and world bosses in the dark, open world of Sanctuary. Does Diablo 4 take place before Diablo 3?
No, Diablo 4 is not a prequel. In fact, it’s the opposite – Diablo 4 is a sequel to Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls. The game takes place five decades after the events of Diablo 3, with a very different version of Sanctuary to explore.

Diablo 4 is set roughly 50 years after Diablo 3, after the destruction of the Black Soulstone and defeat of the Prime Evils, and the vast majority of the population of Sanctuary has been slaughtered. Both the High Heavens and Burning Hells are at war, and this has created a power vacuum in the world that Lilith, daughter of Mephisto, is on a bloody campaign to claim.
The main story of Diablo 4 is about tracking down Lilith to defeat her and keep her from destroying humanity with her intense hatred.
Diablo 4 will feature the beloved hack-and-slash gameplay the franchise is known for, with plenty of gruesome monsters to slaughter and of course, amazing loot to pick up along the way. Players will create their own avatar to travel the grim world of Sanctuary and level up their skill tree in five distinct classes; Rogue, Necromancer, Barbarian, Sorceress, and Druid. There are plenty of cosmetics available to customize your avatar even further.
Plenty of new features including harvesting will be available, bringing new life into the franchise that’s been alive since 1996.
Diablo 4 launches with a release date of June 6, 2023, for fans of the series to slash through, with early access beginning June 1 and cross-play capabilities for every console.
