The Diablo series is beloved by fans and contains some of the greatest lore, fights, and characters in the world of video games. Diablo 4 is Blizzard’s next installment in the series but it isn’t the only Diablo game releasing updates in 2024. Diablo Immortal is the developer’s mobile game and many players may be curious to know if the fourth game and it are similar. While they may have the Diablo name attached to them, is Diablo 4 like Diablo Immortal?

Does Diablo 4 play like Diablo Immortal?

In a sense, yes, the two games are similar in design, gameplay, and mechanics. You’ll do practically the same thing in either game but how you go about doing it feels rather different. Both are RPGs but Diablo Immortal is only available on mobile devices, while Diablo 4 is on consoles and PC.

There are a lot of ways the two games are similar to one another, yet you’ll also find several differences. Their play style is nearly identical, from the way you fight and outfit your character, to the way you accept quests and interact with NPCs. Immortal is meant to be played in short bursts with fast-paced action that keeps you locked in for a short period of time. While Diablo 4 is a more detailed and larger game meant to last several hours and hold your attention through cutscenes and story.

How are Diablo 4 and Diablo Immortal alike?

Both games allow you to create a custom character and choose a starting class. While Diablo Immortal features six classes including the Monk, Wizard, Barbarian, Necromancer, Demon Hunter, and Crusader, whereas Diablo 4 only includes the Necromancer, Rogue, Sorceress, Barbarian, and Druid classes.

Bosses and monsters work similarly as well. You’ll find them in dungeons and around the world and can either take them on alone or partner with other players to defeat them. As you can join others in both games, you must always be online in Diablo Immortal and Diablo 4. You’ll also collect loot in both games and can equip armors, weapons, and gear to your characters by dragging and dropping new equipment to their character sheet.

When it comes to enhancing the games, both will get updates throughout their lifetime. This can include a quarterly update to fix problems or push out patches or DLC.

Both games follow the events of Diablo as a whole. Diablo Immortal is set after Diablo 2 and Diablo 4 comes 20 years after Diablo 3. Also, both have release dates in June. Diablo Immortal launched in 2022 and Diablo 4 launch in 2024.

How are Diablo 4 and Diablo Immortal different?

The two games are quite different from one another as well. Diablo Immortal includes microtransactions where you can spend real money to buy loot chests full of equipment for your character. This gear increases your strength and fortitude in battles and while it isn’t required, as the game is free to play, it’s a quick way to pay-for-power as it were to level up your character. While Diablo 4 may feature microtransactions, it is only for cosmetics and not in any way part of the core mechanics of the game.

Speaking of microtransactions, Diablo Immortal is free-to-play and therefore has microtransactions as a way for it to make a profit. With Diablo 4 being a full price game, you’ll have to spend money to purchase it first, but it’s yours forever after that. You’ll also have options when it comes to what editionmo you want.

If you’re looking for cross-progression in Diablo Immortal, you won’t find it at all. As the game is mobile-only, you’ll only be able to play with other mobile users. Diablo 4 does include cross-progression as it’s available on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.

Another huge way in which the two are different is how much time you’ll spend playing each. Diablo Immortal includes shorter dungeons and faster gameplay, while Diablo 4 features a longer more thought-out story with cutscenes and lengthier more involved dungeons.

It really comes down to your preference and how you like to play video games. If you want to get your Diablo franchise kick on the go, you can play Diablo Immortal anywhere as long as you have internet access. For those who prefer more detailed plots, freedom to explore, and enhanced graphics, Diablo 4 is more stunning to look at and play.
