Hogwarts Legacy is in a strange place within the Harry Potter universe. With the setting placing it before any prequels up to this point, and almost a completely fresh batch of characters with the exception of two, it makes you wonder. So, is Hogwarts Legacy canon?
Well, according to the official Hogwarts Legacy website, it’s heavily engrossed in the lore, but it’s not a direct adaptation of any of J.K Rowling’s works.

Hogwarts Legacy does not follow the books or films
Despite the above subheading, this does not count Hogwarts Legacy out of sharing the moniker of Harry Potter ‘canon’. The FAQs section on the Hogwarts Legacy website does indeed state that the game is very much anchored into the “Wizarding World lore”.
However, this is probably not enough to satisfy fans of the Harry Potter series. Regardless of the guiding hand that Rowling’s team might have had in the production of the game, her involvement in the actual writing or creation is limited from what we can gather.
Whilst her go-ahead is paramount to the game’s development, we cannot be sure this means that the game is canon.
How connected is JK Rowling to Hogwarts Legacy?
Its appears as if WB Games and Portkey Games are walking quite a thin tight-rope as of late. They both confirm confirm that they are collaborating closely with her team in order to ensure a gaming experience that rings true to the books and films, yet they also deny her involvement in the creation of the game.
J.K Rowling still stands to profit from the game’s success, as the owner and founder of the base intellectual property and rights to the stories created from her works, but Portkey are adamant that they will “chart new territory” for the expanded Wizarding World.
Is Hogwarts Legacy cross platform?
In our minds, Hogwarts Legacy will most likely stay outside the realms of official lore, being a completely new “unwritten” story, according to the trailers. This tells us that game developers and writers who may have a deep understanding of the universe are at the helm, and not the original texts or films.
Therefore, whilst we know that some canonical characters are in Hogwarts Legacy, we believe that it is more likely than not that this game will be non-canon. However, the debate is left open, and is currently been had on Reddit.
Is Hogwarts Legacy on PC?
Yes, it will be out on PC. This copy can also be played on the Steam Deck and with a controller too.
