Mortal Kombat 1 was announced and it aims to bring the franchise back to its origins. The launch trailer revealed by NetherRealm Studios has shown plenty of faces that fans of the series will remember. With the franchise moving in a new direction, there are plenty of questions to be had.
The Mortal Kombat series has always been about fighting your friends and NPCs. Many fighting games have a strong focus on being able to play against others. So what about Mortal Kombat 1? Is Mortal Kombat 1 multiplayer?
Will Mortal Kombat 1 have multiplayer?
If you are wondering whether or not you will be able to fight your friends in the new world created by the fire god Liu Kang, the answer is yes. Just like previous titles in the series, the game will have online multiplayer elements.
This doesn’t come as a surprise since many of the older games in the franchise are multiplayer. Multiplayer modes have existed in the series since it began back in 1992. Many players used to challenge their friends to fights on the old-school arcade machine.
Not many details about the multiplayer were shared but the game will feature Kameo fighters. These fighters are a unique roster of partner characters that you can call during battle and are chosen separately from your main character. The new Kameo fighter system will enhance gameplay possibilities and offer a new means of enjoying the game with your friends.
While there were many familiar characters such as Raiden, Shang Tsung, Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Kung Lao, there are sure to be additions to the main roster of fighters when the game releases in September.
If you plan on playing online, you will need an online membership for the console you are playing on. For instance, those on Switch will need a Nintendo Switch Online Membership. There has been no word about whether the game will have in-game currency but the devs have stated that the multiplayer will be rollback netcode.
A lot of focus has been on multiplayer, but there should also be a new story mode centered around the characters as well as additional special moves, a new fighting system, and other game modes. There has been no word about whether or not the game will feature offline modes but there have been hints that Mortal Kombat 1 will not feature crossplay at launch.
Is there co-op for Mortal Kombat 1?
There is no co-op for Mortal Kombat 1, and the reasoning is pretty obvious to some. You are fighting the other person on the screen, so it would be difficult to have more than two martial artists on screen at once.
