Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone fans are not happy with BlackCell Battle Pass for Season 3. In MW2 and Warzone 2 Season 3 there is no premium Battle Pass Bundle – instead this is replaced by BlackCell, which at $29.99 is certainly not cheap. So what do you get and is it worth the money? Let’s take a quick look at what’s included in the BlackCell Bundle.

MW2 BlackCell bundle cost

The BlackCell bundle can be purchased for $29.99 and replaces the premium Battle Pass Bundle. It’s the same price across all platforms and you’re able to pick it up at any time during the season.

In terms of what you get over the Standard Battle Pass (which costs 1,100 COD points but can be earned via grinding through the game’s multiplayer), expect to see what Activision claim is more than 7,000 COD points in value. This is broken up as the following:

  • Battle Pass BlackCell Sector, Token Tier Skips (25 on PlayStation)
  • 1,100 COD Points Bonus
  • Immediate Item Unlocks, Including New Operator and Weapon Blueprint:
  • Special Season 03 Bonus Operator Skins

Battle Pass BlackCell Sector, Token Tier Skips (25 on PlayStation)

The BlackCell Sector lets you unlock higher value access quicker – which is great but ultimately for those who like taking their time with things is not much a draw. The same goes for the 20 Battle Token Tier Skips (25 on PlayStation) that BlackCell comes with. In time, you’ll get to the level you want – so unless you’re in a rush, this isn’t a game changer.

Immediate Item Unlocks, Including New Operator and Weapon Blueprint:

One of the more exciting draws is the immediate unlock of BlackCell’s very own Operator, known as Atom. Not only that, but you also get your hands on the “Singularity” Assault Rifle Pro-Tuned Blueprint, a five-attachment all-around beast of a weapon, which does sound pretty nice. The “Singularity” Pro-Tuned Blueprint features an extended magazine, precision sight picture, and angled grip and a brake – offering precision and power. The real selling point here is that all of these attachments come Pro-Tuned, meaning an Operator will have this weapon’s full potential unlocked straight out of the armory. Still, if assault rifles aren’t your thing, this isn’t worth the upgrade.

Special Season 03 Bonus Operator Skins

So, if you upgrade to BlackCell you’ll get BlackCell-only Battle Pass items available as exclusive additional unlocks on top of the regular Battle Pass content, within the AO Sectors. These include a dozen additional Operator Skins, all themed around the sleek black-and-gold aesthetic of the new addition to the Operator roster.

These are all decent unlocks and will certainly appeal to players who want more customization options for their weapons. There are also bonus BlackCell Skins for each of the Battle Pass operator skins, including Ghost, Soap, and other favorite Operators across KorTac and SpecGru, unlocked with every Operator Skin unlock in the Battle Pass.

1,100 COD Points Bonus

Finally, you get a ton of CoD points – which does represent value. After all, there’s plenty to unlock and purchase in Call of Duty. If you’re not interested in buying anything, though, we would recommend sticking with the standard battle pass (which we chat about below).

BlackCell Battle Pass community reaction

Unsurprisingly, the community is less than impressed with the pricing. One wrote on the MW2 sub-Reddit: “Don’t fall for it; you told yourself you wouldn’t. Don’t Simp for Mommy V either; you’ll be just fine mateys. Give the devs a real run for their effort before they earn your respect again.” Another added: “People are still gonna buy it, and we’re still gonna get seasonal updates with only 1 new map. Clown world.”

Its not just the pricing, though, that is in the crosshairs. The actual design and UI with the new Battle Pass map is also getting some stick, with gamers complaining it looks squashed and unfinished. We’re hoping a small hotfix will resolve that.

Is the BlackCell Battle Pass worth it?

If the BlackCell Battle Pass is too expensive for you right now, the good news is the basic pass can be yours for the 1,100 CoD Points. Speaking from experience, as a casual COD player, I have never brought a Battle Pass and it certainly isn’t a game changer in my view. Yes, it takes longer to unlock stuff, but for me, the biggest value comes in making the most of the Double XP events that are scattered around the year, and strategically using double XP tokens around the map.

You can also go down the buying individual battle pass tokens for 150 CoD points each if need be, but if you’re planning on picking up a few, opt for the bundle as it’ll work out as better value. As mentioned earlier, you can also upgrade to BlackCell at any point and nab the 1,100 COD Point back in addition to all the other content. If you’re in two minds, this is what we would recommend – grind for a while, see how you go, and if you’re still desperate for skins and tier skips, upgrade to BlackCell. Happy hunting.
