The classic first-person action-adventure game is reborn, with the System Shock remake available to veterans and new players on May 30, 2023. Updated graphics, and new gameplay, but still faithful to the original all await you aboard Citadel Station. Fans are wondering if you’ll be facing the monsters alone or if you will be able to fight with friends. Will System Shock be multiplayer?

Does System Shock have multiplayer?

No, System Shock will not allow you to play through the campaign mode with anyone else. This makes sense as the game is designed to be a solo adventure, and part of the fear comes from wandering the tight corridors of Citadel Station alone.

This stays faithful to the original System Shock, which was single-player only and didn’t feature any cooperative mode, although System Shock 2 did allow for a four-player team to take on the campaign. Nightdive Studios wanted the game to be as true to the original as possible, and only make changes where necessary.

System Shock puts players in the shoes of a nameless hacker aboard the Citadel Station, which has horrors crawling all over brought on by an AI named SHODAN, who has had all their ethical constraints removed. Mutated monsters attack you on the ship, following the commands of SHODAN whose final goal is to destroy Earth.

Nightdive Studios has done everything in its power to keep the remake faithful to the original, including consulting with members of the original System Shock team while updating things like graphics and making the game a smoother, scarier experience for old-school fans and newcomers to enjoy.

There is plenty of blood and gore you can see in the trailer, so even though you’ll be taking on the horrors lurking on the Citadel Station by yourself, your friends can experience it on their own single-player campaign to enjoy the horror by themselves, too.
