The Master Sword has been with Link almost since the beginning of the Legend of Zelda franchise. The weapon is more iconic than any of the characters at this point and going without it in a single game would crush fans everywhere.
Since Tears of the Kingdom is a direct sequel to Breath of the Wild, the Master Sword should already be in Link’s possession. So this should be an open-and-shut case, right? Is the Master Sword in Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom? If not, what happened to it?

The short answer to the question is yes. Of course, the Master Sword is in Tears of the Kingdom. After all, Link has it at the end of Breath of the Wild and we know this is the same Link from that game. The big difference between Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom is that the Master Sword is broken.
Many of the trailers have already shown the Master Sword but if you pay attention, the blade of the sword looks different. No, it isn’t a special blade that you can craft in the game using Link’s new abilities. Instead, half of the blade is replaced by what appears to be Zonai energy.
This is a huge step forward for Nintendo since the Master Sword has never been broken in one of the Zelda games. On top of the other changes like Link’s new Ultrahand, Tears of the Kingdom seems to be changing the series in a positive way.
What does this mean for the story? Well, we believe that the Master Sword will get broken right away in the game. Afterward, much of the game will be focused on reforging the sword in a new way, giving the Master Sword a new identity. What this means for Fi, the goddess inside the Master Sword, is a complete mystery.
