Wallpaper Engine is one of the best pieces of software available on steam to customize the aesthetic on your desktop.

Wallpaper Engine has fast become one of the most popular downloads on Steam and for good reason too.

Wallpaper Engine costs around $4 and has thousands of wallpapers to choose from, plus the option to create your own but can you trust it?

Is Wallpaper Engine safe?

Yes, you absolutely can trust Wallpaper Engine.

A message from one of the developers called Tim in 2019 addressed this issue:

Yes, the wallpapers are safe and we take security very seriously. Wallpaper Engine supports four wallpaper types: Scenes, Videos, Web-based wallpapers and application wallpapers. The only real threat can come from application wallpapers, however, these wallpapers are very rare and we provide a big warning that cannot be missed the first time you run a specific application wallpaper. Even then, we have not heard of any application-based wallpapers containing malicious code.Tim @ Steam Community

He states that the only thing you need to slightly concern yourself would be the app wallpapers and that “If you stick to Scene and Video wallpapers you will be absolutely safe.

Another thing to look at in regard to safety is the overwhelmingly positive review the game has received. It currently sits at 98% “Overwhelmingly Positive, one of the highest-rated “games” on the platform.

The new Scene Wallpaper with SceneScript is not sandboxed, with Wallpaper Engine using native JS and a few other custom functions.

Can I get a virus from Wallpaper Engine?

Everything on Wallpaper Engine is completely safe except for unapproved ‘application’ type wallpapers.

Not to worry though, the software will let you know if you open anything malicious/ not guaranteed to be safe.

you should also be aware that some web Wallpapers may contain ads but they cannot create popups.
