The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is arriving this year – and will no doubt be one of the biggest releases on the Nintendo Switch, acting as the sequel to the earth shattering 2017 success that was Breath of the Wild.

As we can expect, given that development began shortly after Breath of the Wild’s release, and the returning directorship of Hidemaro Fujibayashi, and producer Eiji Aonuma at the helm, we might expect a similar treatment for the sequel.

So what has changed? Can we expect a similar game returning for Tears of the Kingdom? What fans loved about Breath of the Wild was the lean into RPG mechanics and the open world system, so is Legend of Zelda Tears of the Kingdom open world?

Is Tears of the Kingdom open world?

Well, considering what we have to go off (trailer footage & previous Zelda game experiences), we would argue that there’s a high likelihood that Tears of the Kingdom will be open world.

I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right? Breath of the Wild was such a smash hit, it would be foolish to change this model, especially since the game’s coverage so far has been as a Breath of the Wild sequel.

The trailer also shows footage of Link climbing large branches and soaring on a bird-shaped platform. We’ve explored the vast landscapes in BOTW, so perhaps it’s time to look to the sky.

Moreover, according to Nintendo: “In addition to the vast lands of Hyrule, the latest entry in the storied Legend of Zelda series will take you up into the skies and an expanded world that goes beyond that!”

This gives us an idea of just how big the open world will be, along with a hint of the verticality we can expect. Size wise, we are hoping to see something in the range of Breath of the Wild’s 23.5 square miles.

So, as a quick sign off, despite past arguements to suggest otherwise, we’re more likely than not going to be getting an open-world game that not only showcases a brand new setting for Link, but builds open the existing turf that we had in BOTW.

Think Hyrule, with Skyward Sword on steroids stacked on top of it! That’s what we predict, anyway.
