When taking on some of the more difficult mobs in Minecraft, such as the Wither or Ender Dragon, it helps to have all the back-up you can get. And that might include Potions of Strength, which increase the damage you cause when attacking a mob or another player.

Unlike some other potions, there are two different levels of the Strength effect. As well as talking you through how to make the basic Strength potions in Minecraft, we’ll also show you how to obtain Strength II.

How to make Strength Potion in Minecraft

As with almost all other potions in Minecraft, you will need to start with an Awkward Potion. Place up to three water bottles in the bottle slots of your Brewing Stand. Add Blaze Powder to the fuel slot, and Nether Wart to the ingredient slot.

Thankfully, Strength potions are pretty easy to make if you’re already set up for brewing, as the main ingredient is Blaze Powder, which you’ll already have as fuel. So, once you have Awkward Potions in your Brewing Stand, add another Blaze Powder, this time to the ingredient slot.

Once brewing has finished, you’ll have up to three Strength Potions that will last three minutes each. This will increase your melee damage by three (one-and-a-half hearts), per hit for the three minutes.

How to make Extended Strength Potion

You can make a Minecraft Strength Potion last eight minutes. To do this, place up to three three-minute Strength Potions into your Brewing Stand, and add Redstone Dust to the ingredient slot. Make sure you have fuel, adding more Blaze Powder to the fuel slot if not, and once brewing has finished, you’ll now have potions that deliver +3 Attack Damage for a total of eight minutes.

How to make Splash or Lingering Strength Potion

If you want to know how to make Splash Strength potions, take a look at our general Minecraft potion-making guide, as the ingredients you need to add are the same for any Splash or Lingering potion.

How to increase the level of your Minecraft Strength Potion

You can increase the effectiveness of your Strength effect by brewing a Strength II potion. However, this can only be done with the lower duration potion, and will further decrease the duration of the Strength II potion. Therefore, to decide which potion you’ll need, you’ll want to think about what you’re using it for. Do you need the potion effect to last longer, or be more powerful for a short burst of time? If the latter, then Strength II might be what you need.

To make a Strength II potion, place up to three three-minute Strength Potions in your Brewing Stand. Ensure you have fuel, and place Glowstone Dust in the ingredient slot. This will turn the three-minute Strength potions into 1:30-minute Strength II Potions that deliver twice the damage, i.e. six additional melee damage (three hearts) per hit.

Looking at the differences between your choice of Strength Potions in the table below, you can see that, technically, a Strength Potion of increased duration offers the most overall damage increase. However, the battle you are about to undertake might not last eight minutes – or you might not live that long – which is why you’ll need to consider which Strength Potion is best for the fight ahead!

PotionDurationMelee Damage Increase
Strength Potion3:00+3 (1.5 Hearts) per melee hit
Strength Potion8:00+3 (1.5 Hearts) per melee hit
Strength II Potion1:30+6 (3 Hearts) per melee hit
