Squid are passive creatures in Minecraft that can spawn in groups of two to four rivers and oceans. They float around aimlessly in the water, moving in three different directions. Squids have no special powers or characteristics, and are a passive mob. Even if the player is attacking them, they do not attack back. In this article, find out everything you need to know about them.

What are Glow Squid?

Glow Squid are one of Minecraft’s numerous aquatic critters. They are passive and have no special abilities, as previously stated. Unlike their non-glowing Squid counterpart, they can only be found in dark underwater areas, mainly in deep underwater cave systems. Their unique, luminous, aqua hue and dynamic texture can be used to identify them. When Glow Squid move about, they make a distinctive pearly sound and produce crystalline particles.

Where do they spawn?

Glow Squid spawn in groups of two to four below Y-level 30, in total darkness – just like another Caves and Cliffs mob, the Axolotl. They appear to be glowing, yet they do not contribute to the light levels in the surrounding environment in any manner since they do not actually emit light. When Glow Squid and Axolotls spawn in the same location, the latter has the advantage in fighting since Axolotls can attack Glow Squid but not the other way around. Glow Squid infant variations have a 5% chance of spawning in Minecraft Bedrock Edition, but Glow Squid cannot be bred.

What do Glow Squid drop?

When killed, Glow Squid can drop one to three Glow Ink Sacs. As confirmed by the Minecraft wiki, the maximum amount dropped is increased by one per level of Looting, for a maximum of one to six with Looting III. Glow Ink Sacs can be used to craft Glow Item Frames, a variant on the original Item Frame which appears as though backlit. You can also use a Glow Ink Sac on the text of any sign to create glowing text. This can be done on any color ink.

Additionally, one to three experience points are gained by killing one Glow Squid.

How do they behave?

Glow Squid in Minecraft

Glow Squid, like regular Squid, move aimlessly in the water and go in three directions. If forced out of the water, they will suffocate, having just 15 seconds – or 300 in-game ticks – to live after breaking the surface. Glow Squid stop shining for five seconds or 100 in-game ticks when assaulted. They may also be assaulted by Guardians and Elder Guardians in the same way that they attack players.

When were Glow Squid introduced to Minecraft?

Glow Squid were released to Minecraft in the first Caves and Cliffs Update, 1.17. This was following the luminous mob’s victory in the Minecraft Live 2020 mob vote, when it won in a public vote against the Iceologer (an existing mob from Minecraft Dungeons), and the Moobloom (an existing mob from the now defunct Minecraft Earth).

Glow Squid are the mobs people should definitely look out for. Their lovely aesthetic and ethereal light add a special touch to the game which we all can agree upon, and their Glow Ink Sacs provide some excellent uses.
