MTG Arena Rotation 2022

MTG Arena Rotation 2022

As with paper Magic the Gathering, new sets are released a few times a year, rotating old cards out of various different formats. While paper magic has a huge number of formats with different rotations and banlists, MTG Arena has 2 different rotating formats and 2 legacy formats.

The upcoming rotation will be happening at the very beginning of September. Typically, sets on MTG Arena release a day before the pre-release for the paper counterpart.

That means the release of Dominaria United should happen on September 1, 2022, assuming that we get the set a day ahead of the real-world cardboard version.

When this happens, we’ll be losing access to 4 sets in both Alchemy and Standard formats. The 4 sets in question are:

  • Zendikar Rising
  • Kaldheim
  • Strixhaven: School of Mages
  • Dungeons & Dragons: Adventures in the Forgotten Realms

What is the next set for MTG Arena

MTG Arena Dominaria Unlimited

The upcoming set is the same for both paper Magic and MTG Arena. Next on the block is Dominaria Unlimited, a return to a location that was the default setting of Magic the Gathering blocks in the early days.

We’ve been back to the plane a few times, but this is the first time since 2018 that we’ve gone back to the foundational plane that started MTG’s multiverse.

Right now, there aren’t very many concrete details on the set’s storyline or themes. We do know that the set is going to feature some familiar faces, but that’s not exactly much of a shocker.

Beyond 2022, we also have The Brothers’ Wars set due out at the start in 2024, which was also be seeing an MTG Arena release down the line.

Does MTG Arena Have all Sets?

While MTG Arena has been around since late 2018, the original paper game has been around since 1993. As such, there are a lot of early sets that haven’t made an appearance in MTG Arena.

Many older cards have been added to the game through special one-off products and side-sets, but for the most part these are the sets that are currently available in the game to actually purchase:

  • Kaladesh Remastered
  • Amonkhet Remastered
  • Ixalan
  • Rivals of Ixalan
  • Dominaria
  • Core Set 2019
  • Guilds of Ravnica
  • Ravnica Allegiance
  • War of the Spark
  • Core Set 2020
  • Throne of Eldraine
  • Theros Beyond Death
  • Ikoria Lair of Behemoths
  • Core 2021
  • Zendikar Rising
  • Kaldheim
  • Strixhaven School of Magic
  • Innistrad Midnight Hunt
  • Innistrad Crimson Vow
  • Kamigawa Neon Dynasty
  • Streets of New Capenna
  • Alchemy Horizons Baldur’s Gate

What is Alchemy Horizons Baldur’s Gate in MTG Arena

The last set released for MTG Arena was Alchemy Horizons Baldur’s Gate, a digital-only set containing cards for Arena’s Alchemy format.

This set features various cards from the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur’s Gate paper set but they’ve rebalanced to work better with the 1-vs-1 formats common on Arena. There’s also a bunch of digital-only cards included, all designed to be drafted in the Alchemy format.
