Let’s dive into our weapon tier list for an in-depth look at the game’s arsenal.

Modern Warfare 2 Weapon Tier List

Below, you’ll find our list of the best weapons in Modern Warfare 2 and why we think they should be some of your first choices next time you’re putting a loadout together.

Remember, as true as our list might be, if your playstyle doesn’t match with a gun, you’ll be better off not using it.

M4

M4 1

The workhorse of most modern militaries, the M4 platform is a flexible weapons platform that can be reconfigured for close, medium, and long-range combat. Chambered by default in 5.56mm, this assault rifle packs both firepower and range. With a high rate of fire and decent accuracy, this AR is a solid choice in the right hands.

M16

m16

The predecessor to the modern M4, the classic M16 fires three-round bursts ideal for long-range engagements. Favoring accuracy overspray and pray style shooting, the M16 is ideal for hanging back and plinking enemies at a distance, preferably with an optic sight picture that’s nice and open.

Lachmann-556

lachmann 556

Bigger than the M4, the Lachmann-556 brings some serious firepower to the battlefield at the expense of mobility and handling. A shorter barrel and more tactical stock can improve handling but at the cost of range.

Kastov 74U

kastov

The compact and agile Kastov 74U is ideal for those who are fleet of foot. With superb mobility and handling, the Kostov is an ideal choice for getting up close and personal or flanking dug-in enemies.

TAQ-56

taq56

Similar to the M4 the TAQ-56 brings firepower and flexibility to a gun fight. Like most ARs, unless reconfigured for close-quarters combat you’ll want to hang back. Mounted behind cover though you’ll be a severe problem for anyone down range.

FTAC Recon

FTAC recon

This semi-automatic battle rifle is ideal for mid to long-range combat but can still be viable up close, provided your attachments are geared toward aim-down-sight speed. The high damage output will defeat enemies in one to two shots but be mindful of the low magazine size.

Lachmann-762

762 1

The Lachmann is chambered in 7.62, which means immense power. It can be fired in semi-automatic or three-round bursts. A 20-round magazine makes it more ideal for long range but like the FTAC can be set up to run close-quarters combat.

Lachmann Sub

mp5

The Lachmann sub is an all-around well-balanced submachine gun. With a 30-round mag chambered in 9mm it’s designed for speed and quick target acquisition. Run it with an AR if you want to be effective at long and close range.

FSS Hurricane

fss hurricane

The hurricane is a new addition to COD, and it straddles the line between an AR and an SMG. With a reasonable rate of fire and ammo capacity, it’s a fine choice for close to mid-range combat. What it lacks in stopping power, it makes up for in stability.

Fennec 45

fennec

The Fennec 45, chambered in .45 ACP, is ideal for up close and personal combat. The high rate of fire will give you the ability to clear rooms with ease. Just know you’ll be sacrificing range and accuracy for a more aggressive playstyle.

Expedite 12

expedite

The Expedite 12 is the only shotgun available in the multiplayer beta, but it’s semi-automatic, so no need to pump it. Great for close-quarters and room clearing, pack it along with an AR to make you more effective at various ranges.

556 Icarus

icarus

The Icarus is based on the M4 platform and brings a lot of the same qualities to the table. This Squad-support weapon offers you deeper pockets when it comes to ammunition and not at the cost of mobility.

RAPP H

RAPP h

This is essentially a Lachmann-762 with a belt-fed magazine. The extra ammo will come at the cost of mobility, but given its roots as an AR, it still has solid handling.

Sakin MG38

sakin mg38

If digging in and controlling corridors is your style, then pack the Sakin MG38. Chambered in 7.62, you’ll be able to throw some serious lead down range. Just don’t expect to clear rooms or go face-to-face with it.

LM-S

LMS

This semi-automatic marksman rifle is something between a battle rifle and a sniper rifle. Its 10-round magazine and slow rate of fire make it less ideal for close range. Stick to cover at long range and use an optic of your choice to engage the enemy from afar.

Lockwood MK2

lever action

The Lockwood is for those with a sense of style. Its old-fashioned lever action makes the rate of fire on this weapon hardly ideal for the modern battlefield, but it packs a serious punch. If you’ve got the spirit of a cowboy, then this is an obvious choice.

Signal 50

sniper

This .50 caliber sniper rifle fires a devastating anti-material round that can slice through concrete with ease. Engage at a distance and time your shots – all it takes is one to knock an enemy out of the fight for good.

Modern Warfare 2 Weapon Tier List FAQs

How do you unlock the 50 Cal sniper rifle in COD mw2?

The rifle is unlocked at level 20 but the progress for players is capped at 15 for now so that players who joined the beta early don’t have an unfair advantage.

Whats the best gun in cod mw2?

It’s entirely dependent on playstyle, but we have had great success with the FSS Hurricane submachine gun.
