MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role playing game) all have very different armor systems. If you are familiar with FFXIV, you’ll know that its armor is job-specific. If you play WoW, you’ll know that certain classes can equip certain armor types. If you like Elder Scrolls, you know your armor types add skills all classes can use etc. The New World armor system is more akin to Elder Scrolls, where anyone can use any armor type. The key difference with New World is specializing in an armor type provides exclusive buffs. Here is an overview of armor in New World.

New World Armor Types

There are three different categories of armor in New World: Light, Medium, and Heavy. The three armor types offer various bonuses, depending on what your character is wearing.

  • Light Armor – Provides the biggest DPS boost and best dodge.
  • Medium Armor – Slightly less damage buff than light armor but has better CC.
  • Heavy Armor – The best damage resistance and CC strengths but the weakest dodge.

New World Light Armor

Light Armor is the “DPS” and most mobile armor in the game. Light armor provides the largest dodge in the game while offering a 20% damage bonus. If you want to do as much damage as possible, then light armor is for you.

New World Medium Armor

Meanwhile, Medium armor increases all damage by 10%, which is 10% less than Light armor. However, your Medium armor status enhances your CCs (crowd control) effects by 10%. Also, your dodge turns into a hop, which creates enough space to escape the wrath of your enemy.

New World Heavy Armor

Finally, we have Heavy armor. Heavy armor absorbs the most damage of all the New World armor types. However, your dodge doesn’t create as much space as Light or even Medium due to its weight. The trade-off is that the CC effects increase by 20% and your block stability by 15%. Heavy armor is better suited for CC bots, tanks, or other juggernaut frontliners for PvP who want to control the battlefield.

New World Armor Weight

New World Armor Weight
The bar next to your items show how far you are away from reaching a new armor type.

New World uses a weight system to determine what classification of armor your character is using. It does mean you can get creative with your gear combinations. If you want the Light armor bonuses, then you can equip mainly Light pieces of gear. Then you may find you have enough room to equip a Medium chest piece for that extra damage resistance without offsetting your Light armor buffs. The same goes for Medium Armor equipping a Heavy Chest piece and several other examples.

When it comes to the end game, you can get creative with individual pieces of gear. When you start acquiring Tier V gear from Expeditions, Corrupted events  or crafting, you may receive a piece of gear perfect for your build. It may not fit your armor type, but it may not weigh enough to tip you into the next armor category. Amazon Games have made an exciting armor system, and it is undoubtedly worth experimenting with every time you get new gear.

New World Armor sets

New World is an RPG after all, and so they have brought with them cosmetic New World Armor sets to buff your characters. There are many different armor sets and here are a few examples. Of course these are only some examples and don’t reveal the full New World Armor sets currently in the game.

  • The Fishermen’s Set –  a fishing reward set that grants slight boosts to your primary stats early for your levelling.
  • The Lumberjack Set – You acquire this set through the gathering system by crafting and trading.
  • Deepmist Set – You can acquire this set via questing and collect loot from mobs and treasure chests out in the open world.
  • Duelist Set – A set you can get from looting or drops from PvE sources. It gives defence against elemental damage.
  • Sage Set – A crafting set available from Tier 3 and Tier 5 crafting.
  • Explorer’s set – An ideal PvE set for travelling around the open world.
  • Soldier’s set – Grants bonuses to strength and along with heavy armor classification that is craftable or traded at auction houses.

New World Repairing Armor

To repair your armor, you need to get repair parts by salvaging your gear. You earn a small amount of gold and repair parts every time you salvage a piece of gear. You can then spend those repair parts by repairing specific gear pieces or the Repair All button located at the bottom of your screen when you press the Tab key.

Misc Armor Interactions

You’ll be pleased to know you can transmog your gear in New World. If you have a completed skin set, you can apply that attire to your current gear. This is mainly for store cosmetics, but there are full sets to unlock in-game.

If full sets are not your thing, then you can dye every piece of your armor. You can acquire various dye colours by harvesting plants from the open world. Each plant has different colors, corresponding to potential dye you can loot every time you harvest them.
