*Updated* Pokemon Go Giovanni Counters August 2022

Giovanni will likely return with his Persian and Shadow Pokemon in Pokemon Go next month.

August is here, and so are our Pokemon Go Giovanni counters, which fall roughly in line with what we’d predicted:

Persian

Persian Counters:

Breloom

Machamp

Lucario

Conkeldurr

Blaziken

Persian will always be Giovanni’s first Pokemon that you have to go up against. It is his signature Pokemon and it is most definitely going to be the first opponent in the fight.

Ideally, you should use a Fighting-Type Pokemon like Lucario, Breloom, or Machamp.

There are other options out there as well and having the move Counter in your arsenal can be very helpful in stopping Persian and securing an early win.

Nidoking

Nidoking Counters:

Glaceon

Mewtwo

Garchomp

Kyogre

Excadrill

Nidoking is weak to Ground, Ice, Psychic, and Water-type Pokemon and you can use something like Glaceon or Mewtwo to take on the Pokemon. with fast and charge moves.

You can also use Garchomp as a counter to Nidoking using moves like Mud Shot and Earthquake.

Machamp

Machamp Counters:

Mewtwo

Sylveon

Gardevoir

Alakazam

Rayquaza

Machamp is weak to Fairy, Flying, and Psychic-type moves and we strongly recommend using Mewtwo as the Pokemon is effective against both Nidoking and Machamp.

The Psycho Cut and Psychic Strike combo can absolutely decimate Machamp.

Rhyperior

Rhyperior Counters:

Kyogre

Zarude

Torterra

Swampert

Empoleon

You want to have a Grass or Water type Pokemon with a powerful move like Hydro Cannon or Frenzy Plant to take down Rhyperior quickly.

Fast moves like Razor Leaf and Waterfall could be crucial in opening up opportunities during a fight.

Shadow Latios

Shadow Latios Counters:

Garchomp

Kyurem

Palkia

Dialga

Gengar

To take out Shadow Latios, you can use Bug, Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost, or Ice.

There are strong legendary options available but if you do not have access to them, you can use Gengar’s Shadowball and Shadow Claw to your advantage.

If you do not have the right counter picks, you will have a hard time against the Team Rocket Go leader.

Unlike other Team Go Rocket grunts, he can be quite challenging, and adjusting your lineup to take him on is very important.

Predictions

Prior to them being revealed, we were wondering what the Pokemon Go Giovanni counters for August 2022 could look like. And as we said, we were not far wrong.

Here were our predictions for the Giovanni battle in August 2022.

Pokemon Go Giovanni Counters August 2022

Giovanni’s lineup for August 2022 is likely to be: 

• Phase 1: Persian
• Phase 2: Nidoking/Machamp/Rhyperior
• Phase 3: Unknown Shadow Pokemon

Persian

Persian will always be Giovanni’s first Pokemon that you have to go up against. It is his signature Pokemon and it is most definitely going to be the first opponent in the fight. Machamp

Fairy, Flying, or Psychic-type moves work best against Machamp. Mewtwo is one of the best options for both Nidoking and Machamp. The good old Psycho Cut and Psychic Strike combo that works well against Nidoking is also solid against Machamp.

Rhyperior

Shadow Pokemon

In July 2022, Giovanni used a Shadow Latios but he may switch things up and have a different Shadow Pokemon by his side next month. It is currently unknown what the boss will have up his sleeve but if Latios makes a return, you should use Bug, Dark, Dragon, Fairy, Ghost, or Ice-type Pokemon to take it down.
