The Season of Alola is coming to a close in Pokémon GO, and it’s time to choose your favorite Alolan Island. You should be familiar with them by now, having completed – or at least started – the four island-specific Special Research Stories, so you can use your new-found (or existing!) knowledge of Alola as we go into the fifth and final Season event, Alola to Alola.
Pokémon GO Alola to Alola Season-end event
For the duration of the event, celebrating the region of Alola, Trainers will once again get the chance to encounter all the new Generation VII Pokémon that have made their Pokémon GO debuts during the season. Not only that, but every Island Guardian will return to five-star raids, so you’ll have the opportunity to catch any you might have missed.

Evolve Cubone to get Alolan Marowak!
You may know that Alolan Marowak can only be obtained in the wild, and cannot usually be evolved from Cubone. However, like Alolan Exeggutor before it, Alolan Marowak will be able to be evolved for a limited time. During the Alola to Aloa event, you’ll be able to evolve Cubone or shiny Cubone into an Alolan Marowak that will know the Charged Attack Shadow Bone!
Another Alolan Collection Challenge
There will be another Elite Collector Medal to add to your collection, which will also result in an encounter with Rockruff! Don’t forget, Rockruff can be found in its shiny form, so this is another great opportunity to try and catch yourself a shiny puppy!
Completion of the Collection Challenge will also reward Trainers with 15,000 XP and 15 Ultra Balls.
Additional event bonuses
For the duration of the event, every Trainer will obtain double Stardust for opening Gifts, so it’s a great time to get gifting to your Friends. There will also be new Alolan starter-themed items in the in-game shop, letting you carry around you very own sleeping Rowlet on you back, just like Ash. And, if Litten or Popplio are your preferred starters, you can carry them around, too.
Alola to Alola Season-end Special Research tasks
The Alola to Alola Special Research will not be automatically available for every Trainer. Instead, in order to obtain the fifth and final Season of Alola Special Research, you will need to have completed all four island-specific research lines before June 1, 2022. Between May 25 and June 1, once you have completed the four previous research stories, you’ll find Alola to Alola in your Special Research tab, and will be able to embark on your final Alolan adventure, choosing one of the four Alolan Islands to focus your research on for this branching storyline.
Melemele Island path
If your favorite Island is Melemele, you’ll know it’s all about time with friends, and you’ll be completing research tasks based around your Pokémon GO friendships! Send Gifts, play with your Buddy and take Snapshots, and you’ll earn the following rewards and more:
- Two Poffins
- A Lure Module
- Four Lucky Eggs
- A Pom-Pom Style Oricorio Hat avatar item
- An Alolan Raichu encounter
Akala Island path
For those who love Akala Island, you’ll be completing tasks involving adventuring! Get your walking shoes on, as you’ll need to travel a certain distance, and spin plenty of Pokestops to earn the following rewards and more:
- An Incense
- Two Incubators
- A Super Incubator
- A Pa’u style Oricorio Hat avatar item
- An Alolan Marowak Encounter
Ula’Ula Island path
If you choose the Ula’Ula Island path, you’ll have to catch ‘em all! This path will be all about catching Pokémon and performing quality throws, and will result in the following rewards and more:
- A Glacial Lure
- A Magnetic Lure
- Four Incense
- A Baile Style Oricorio Hat avatar item
- An Alolan Vulpix encounter
Poni Island path
The final island choice, Poni Island, will be all about battling, so get your best team ready if you choose this path! Winning in Trainer Battles or defeating Team GO Rocket will give you the following rewards and more:
- A Rocket Radar
- Three Star Pieces
- A Premium Battle Pass
- A Sensu Style Oricorio Hat avatar item
- An Alolan Exeggutor encounter
If you just can’t settle on which path to choose, tickets will be made available in the in-game shop – again, only to Trainers who have completed the previous four research stories. If you purchase a ticket, you’ll be able to choose another research path to embark on, and will earn additional rewards for doing so. Do note that if you want to complete the same path twice for double the rewards, you can, but you will not receive a second avatar item.
How much are tickets for Alola to Alola Research?
Again, a ticket to access the Alola to Alola Special Research Story will be purchasable from the in-game shop from May 25, 2022, to those who have completed the Island adventures. This ticketed research will give Trainers a bunch of rewards, so check above before you make your choice, and decide if those rewards are worth the $4.99 (or regional equivalent) ticket price.
When is the Alola to Alola event taking place?
The overall Alola to Alola Pokémon GO event will start on May 25, 2022, and Trainers who have already completed all four Island research stories will be able to claim the Alola to Alola research on the same day. Again, you can still complete the first four stories before June 1, 2022, to be able to claim the new research line. While the event itself ends on May 31, at 8pm local time, you’ll keep your Special Research until you’ve completed it!
Need help finishing your four Alolan island research adventures? Look no further! We’ve got guides for each and every set of research tasks you’ll need to complete before June 1, 2022, so you know exactly what you’ll need to accomplish, and the sort of tasks you’ll be undertaking during Alola to Alola.
What’s next for Pokémon GO?
Well, while we don’t yet know what the next Pokémon GO Season will be, it looks like it could well revolve around the debut of Ultra Beasts. An Ultra Beast teaser trailer was released to the Pokémon GO Twitter account on May 24, 2022, and their lore would lend itself perfectly to Pokémon GO Special Research.
