Ditto’s Transform moves means it is able to disguise itself as other Pokémon. This behaviour is implemented into Pokémon Go gameplay, making Ditto one of the trickier Pokémon to find. You gotta catch ‘em all, though, so how do you catch a Ditto in Pokémon Go? Let’s take a look.
How to catch Ditto in Pokémon Go
Ditto is one of the few Pokémon that can only be caught in the wild (with the exception of certain events), and is the only Pokémon with its unique behaviour. As the Transform Pokémon, Ditto is able to disguise itself as other Pokémon, and the way that behaviour manifests itself in the mobile AR game is that, upon catching certain Pokémon, there is a chance that it may reveal itself to be Ditto instead. If a Ditto, once the Pokémon is caught in your Pokéball of choice, the word “Oh?” will appear on screen, and Ditto will spring forth from the ball.
The only way to catch a Ditto, therefore, is to keep catching the various Pokémon it can disguise itself as. In Pokémon Go, Ditto cannot transform into any Pokémon, there is a selection of Pokémon that may be Ditto disguises, and they rotate every few months, so you’ll need to keep up to date with the current Ditto disguises.
Pokémon Go Ditto disguises — April 2022
As of April 1, 2022 – or April Fool’s day to the mischievous among you – Ditto is appearing as a new set of Pokémon. You’ll want to forget what you think you know about which Pokémon may be a transformed Ditto, and get to grips with the new list of Ditto disguises in Pokémon GO for April 2022.
Can Ditto be shiny in Pokémon Go?
Ditto can now appear in its shiny form in Pokémon Go, and there are some rules to this that are helpful to know if you’re on the search for the adorable blue variant.
Firstly, we all know that moment of joy that comes with seeing a shiny encounter pop up on your screen, right? So imagine the pure fury if that shiny Gastly or Dwebble went and turned into a sneaky Ditto? Thankfully, Niantic have thought about this, and have made it so that if you encounter one of Ditto’s potential disguises in its shiny form, it absolutely cannot be a Ditto. That pink, glittering Drowzee will remain a pink, glittering Drowzee. Phew.
So that takes care of the disguise Pokémon in its shiny form, so what about shiny Ditto? Well, this is actually kind of fun. You see, the shiny hunting isn’t over once you click on the disguise Pokémon and see its standard color combination. On the contrary, if you catch a non-shiny disguise Pokémon, it could still be a shiny Ditto.
In conclusion, the only way to catch a shiny Ditto – and a normal Ditto – is keep catching those disguise Pokémon. Don’t forget, as you can’t tell simply from the encounter screen, you will need to make sure you’re stocked up on Pokéballs. Unless you’re supremely lucky, there’s likely a lot of catching before you snap up that little blue blob.
