Danielle has loved writing about games, records and films for as long as she can remember, probably in an effort to feel better about not being able to create them. A keen console gamer from a young age, she now has a collection of old paraphernalia gathering dust — sacrilege! — in the hopes of one day being able to house the ultimate haven of retro gaming systems… including a Guitar Hero arcade machine. She's still saving for that, though.

As part of a huge Nintendo Direct broadcast on September 23, Nintendo has announced a new expansion to the current Nintendo Switch Online services. Games from both the Nintendo 64 and Sega Mega Drive will be playable on the Nintendo Switch. And you’ll be able to play them all on retro controllers.
Nintendo Switch Online N64 Expansion Pack – What Is It?
At present, your Nintendo Switch Online subscription offers you the chance to play a whole host of retro NES and SNES games on your Nintendo Switch console. Continuing the influx of classic games on the Switch, Nintendo has announced that not only Nintendo 64, but also some Sega Mega Drive games, will be coming to a new Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack in October. For a full list of the games being added, check out our full rundown of the announcement.
N64 and Sega Mega Drive Nintendo Switch Controllers
Again, as we have seen with the NES and SNES releases, Nintendo are accompanying the new expansion with the release of two new retro-style controllers for the Nintendo Switch. Sometime after the release of the expansion, you’ll be able to boost your gameplay with either the Nintendo 64 wireless controller or even the SEGA Mega Drive control pad. You will need to have the new Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack in order to be able to order the controllers from the My Nintendo Store.
Nintendo 64 Switch Online Potential Release Date
The release date for the Expansion Pack hasn’t been fully announced, outside of the fact that it will be late October 2021, but that does mean we don’t have long to wait. When the Nintendo Switch Online N64 release date arrives in late October, it will bring with it a selection of Sega games as well. However, it is not yet believed the controllers will be available with the October release date and we may have to wait a little longer to get our hands on them.
In the meantime, you can still get your hands on the NES controllers for the Nintendo Switch on the My Nintendo Store while the SNES controller is currently out of stock.
