The Redmond Barrens is where Shadowrun Returns really starts to open up. You’re out of the tutorial now and into the Shadowrun Trilogy’s first proper mission.

Jake Armitage needs your help with taking out John Paul, the leader of the local Halloweeners gang. The Halloweeners are after the bounty on his head and have soldiers searching for him all over. If you want Jake’s aid in tracking down Sam Watts’ killer, then you’re going to have to help him out first by cutting the head off the Halloweeners and reclaiming The Redmond Barrens.

Navigating The Redmond Barrens can be initially overwhelming after the linear nature of Shadowrun Returns’ tutorial levels. Don’t worry though, we’re here to help you get your bearings and begin to make your mark on the Seattle streets

Shadowrun Trilogy: The Redmond Barrens

As you exit the morgue, Jake Armitage tells you that he has a stash located just nearby. Take a right and head southeast outside of Organ Grinders to meet up with Vlad, who has a dark vision to share with you.

Head back northwest, and continue down the path away from Organ Grinders. At the intersection, move southeast to speak with Sarah, who informs you that the Halloweeners have set up shop in the square nearby.

Shadowrun Trilogy: Gearing up

Redmond Barrens 2 Shadowrun Trilogy Help Jake Armitage

Return to the intersection and move down the northwest alley to find the stash belonging to Jake Armitage. Interact with the stash to receive gear custom-tailored to your class

After picking up your new gear from the stash, you and Jake will be jumped by two muggers. Thankfully, they barely put up a fight. Just your basic class skills and weaponry will be more than enough to put them in the ground.

Returning to the intersection again, you’ll meet a new NPC. The Worrried Man requests help dealing with a group that’s harassing and shaking down the local market. Agreeing to help unlocks your first Side Quest: Help Bullied Merchant.

Help Bullied Merchant

Head Thug Halloweeners

Head northeast from the intersection to find the market. Interacting with the Head Thug gives you several options to deal with the situation.

The top two dialogue choices will antagonize the Thugs and lead to combat. The third option allows you to pay a small amount of Nuyen to avoid a fight and have the Thugs leave.

Alternatively, Etiquette: Gang allows you to persuade them to leave, and with a strength of 4 or higher, you can intimidate the Thugs into handing over 200 Nuyen before fleeing. Speaking with Mrs. James after the interaction with grant you 1 Karma and a potential 48 Nuyen depending on your choices.

Deal with the Halloweeners Gang

 John Paul Halloweeners

After helping out the Bullied Merchant, return to the intersection with the Worried Man and move southeast, then northeast. You’ll soon run into some Halloweener Sentries. Seeing you all buddy-buddy with Jake Armitage, the Halloweeners skip the pleasantries and open fire immediately.

The ensuing firefight starts off a little rough as the Halloweeners get the drop on you. Thankfully, they aren’t exactly the most reliable marksmen. As soon as you can act, maneuver yourself and Jake Armitage into cover. Deal with the sentry nearest you and Jake first, and then take out the Halloweener Mage, as they can buff and support their remaining ally. With the mage down, the gang leader, John Paul, will soon come out of hiding.

John Paul is a much tougher customer than his Halloweener thugs, forgoing firearms to rush you up close with his machete. Thankfully, with his soldiers dispatched, you and Jake can focus your fire on John Paul. He soaks up a lot of hits, but you only need to reduce his overall health to 1/3, at which point he initiates dialogue. Whether you let John Paul walk away humbled or finish the job, the Halloweener threat will be dealt with and you will receive 1 Karma.

Visit the Murder Site

Redmond Barrens 8 Shadowrun Trilogy Jake Armitage Leaves John Paul for dead

Before you head directly to the Murder Site, it’s best to explore around the area a little. At the nearby intersection, speak to Dan the Donut Man for some info on the Barrens. Buying a jelly donut and soykaf also comes in handy very soon.

Move northeast from the intersection to speak with Sally. She witnessed the murder and gives you some small details from her perspective.

Return to the intersection and interact with Bobby, the first merchant you come across in the Shadowrun Trilogy. You can purchase Kamikaze and Nitro stims from Bobby for 50 and 40 Nuyen, respectively.

After speaking with the vendors, move southeast to the Murder Site. As you approach, Jake Armitage takes his leave, unwilling to get too close to the Lone Star cops. Jake hands you 1000 Nuyen as he leaves, and tells you to visit the Seamstresses Union after investigating the crime scene.

Officer Kuprik is posted at the entrance to the crime scene, currently blocking your entry. Lying and attempting to gain access won’t do you any good. A bribe is the only thing to get anywhere with Lone Star. Either hand over 100 Nuyen, or the donut and soykaf purchased earlier to gain access to the scene. Alternatively, Etiquette: Security allows you to smooth-talk your way in.

Investigate the Murder Site

Redmond Barrens 9

There are four points to investigate here, one of which will lead you to pick up Sam Watt’s bar tab receipt from the Seamstress Union. The server’s name is listed as Coyote.

Picking up the coat and blanket from the crime scene allows you to hand them to William nearby, and get some very promising information out of him.

With the investigation complete, you will receive 3 Karma. Time to head over to the Seamstresses Union, and conclude your time in The Redmond Barrens for now…
