Who is SWERY?

“SWERY”, aka  Hidetaka Suehiro is a Japanese auteur game director with a knack for making games that end up regarded as cult classics. He’s one of the minds behind Deadly Premonition, D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die, and The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories. His games are known for not being the most technically proficient, but making up for it with an amazing atmosphere and interesting storytelling choices.

The Missing: J.J. Macfield and the Island of Memories was nominated at The Game Awards 2018 in the Games For Impact category due to it’s exploration of the reasons why people might want to commit acts of self harm. It also won awards for “Game, Original Adventure” and “Song, Original or Adapted” at the National Academy of Video Game Trade Reviewers Awards.

Swery has had a long history with Xbox, so we aren’t surprised to see that relationship continue. Deadly Premonition launched as an Xbox 360 exclusive outside of Japan and remained that way until a Director’s Cut released in 2013. His episodic mystery game D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die was also an Xbox One exclusive published by Microsoft Studios back in 2015, but was cancelled before it’s story could be completed due to SWERY leaving it’s developer Access Games.
