A highly controversial item has been banned from Ranked mode in Warzone. Following widespread frustration and outcry from players, the developers of Warzone have removed thermal optics, also known as thermal scopes.

You can no longer use Thermal Scopes during ranked play, so if you were relying on them, you’ll need a new strategy. It may seem like a big jump to remove Thermal Scopes, but it was widely hated.

Thermal Optics banned from Warzone Ranked

Treyarch confirmed that thermal scopes have been banned from Warzone Ranked.

The biggest issue players had with thermal optics was that the Cold Blooded perk was rendered ineffective against thermal optics. With Cold Blooded, you can remain undetectable by AI targeting systems and thermal optics, which provides a huge advantage.

However, Teplo Clear Shot thermal optics were found to be able to detect enemies equipped with Cold Blooded even when smoke grenades were used.

The controversy escalated when prominent Warzone content creator JGOD shared a clip on Twitter of how it works. Even when the enemy had Cold Blooded equipped, he could use Thermal Scopes to see through smoke grenades and find them.

Thermal scopes provided a somewhat unfair advantage in competitive matches, which ignited a wave of discontent among a good portion of the player base.

Activision seems to have heard but instead of fixing this issue, they removed the thermal scopes entirely. It’s arguable if that was a good solution, but it works. Both ways, this should ensure a level playing field, and players have no reason to worry about the usage of thermal optics anymore.

This caused praise from the fanbase, with one player saying that Treyarch monitored player feedback. There is no confirmation for this, but the player is happy.

Players will be able to focus on skill and strategy rather than relying on these advantages as the World Series of Warzone Qualifiers approaches. We would most likely have seen thermal scopes be a huge part of the strategy for esports players if Activision didn’t do anything, so this ends up helping everyone.
