Weird West’s first big villain of the game is the man-eater, Shelby Cross. This NPC is the first big bad you face, especially during the Bounty Hunter storyline. You might be pleased to know you can dispatch Shelby Cross at the final stage of the first playable character you have. However, if you don’t beat Shelby Cross, then there’s always the chance to beat him on another character thanks to the Wanted board posters.

Weird West Shelby Cross Guide

Before we get into the gritty on Shelby Cross, there is something you need to know. If you’re a completionist, you’ll likely want to do a second playthrough to make sure you get all the achievements or trophies. There is an achievement called Elusive Prey, which you can get if you kill either Shelby Cross, Galen Weeks or Leila through the wanted bounties. In addition, the Out on the Ebb Tide achievement requires you to kill him, along with  Great Escape requires you to get your husband out of the cave without ever alerting Shelby Cross. So, there are potentially three different playthroughs for you to get 100% completed.

Copper Mountain Quarry: Killing Shelby Cross then and there

Weird West Cooper Mountain Quarry Levers
We recommend moving an object to climb up to the lever.

The first main way you can fight Shelby Cross is during the Copper Mountain Quarry level. This location is the secret hideout of the Stillwater gang now that Sirens are working in tandem. You head here with the Sheriff of Glurch, align with Mrs Bell and a companion of your choice. While there, you have to take out a plethora of enemies outside of the mine, along with many enemies inside the mine.

When you get to the water-filled part of the cave, filled with Siren Howlers, you are then getting near to rescuing your spouse. It is worth noting that there is a lever in the corner of the room filled with water, on top of a rock. You can climb that, either by dragging items then rum jumping or getting the jumping perk to make it easier. The other locations of the levers are to the right of the gate you have to get through, or through the hole in the rocks you can climb at the end of the mine track. Lastly, the final lever is located next to where your husband is in a cage. Opening all three levers opens up a door to where Shelby Cross is. You can then fight him and his final henchmen and get the victory.

The Great Escape achievement

If you’re going to try the mission for the entire stealth extraction mission, then there are a few tips we recommend. We recommend making an entire new playthrough, where you focus on the damage to unaware targets and get better sneaking movement speed and better jump.

As for actually progressing the mission, the first is that you ambush as many people at the start and drag them into the bushes and to the side. That is until you have a nice path to sneak through and get into the mine. From there, continue to sneak while you can, and try to avoid the countless NPCs at the first mine track interchange. The hardest part of the room is the water-filled track where the enemies are. You won’t be able to assassinate the sirens unless you have an epic or legendary quality rifle with the unaware bonus. Do be careful with ranged assassinations here, as this area is packed with enemies. Once you’re through, there is a ledge you can climb rather than opening the locked door to get around. Then, it’s just a matter of getting your husband with one final set of baddies left near the bridge lever and one optional butcher NPC watching someone dance in its own little room. It is easy to sneak up and knock them out.

Killing Shelby Cross with Wanted Posters

Bon Jovi appears.

If you didn’t manage to kill Shelby Cross during Weird West’s first act, then you can get your revenge on another character. When you become the pigman, you can find a new bounty hunter mission that targets Shelby Cross for a reward of $250. This mission makes hunting him done much easier, since he isn’t inside the mountain anymore, and behaves like a typical bounty hunter mission. Killing Shelby Cross during this mission awards the player with Elusive Prey achievement. Note you can also get this from other characters like Leila and the corrupt mayor which come much later into the story.
