PlayStation Plus is Sony’s online subscription service for PlayStation consoles. If you play online, you most likely need to pay for the privilege. The only exceptions to this rule are free-to-play games. This means that, if your favourite online multiplayer game is free to begin with, you do not need PS Plus to access online multiplayer gameplay. Some prime examples of this would be Fortnite or Apex Legends.

Most likely, though, you don’t exclusively play free-to-play and offline single-player games. If you play online multiplayer games like FIFA or Call of Duty, you’ll need to pay for your online gameplay, thus you need PlayStation Plus. When you have a current PS Plus subscription, you’ll get access to that online play, plus three free games each month.
