Now as the RTX 40 series settles and upgrades, it might be the right time. So for that, we compare the RTX 4070 Ti Super vs 3080 to see which one holds up the best, now that we’ve had a good look in our RTX 4070 Ti Super review.

One of the most renowned and best GPUs of the time, the RTX 3080 came out initially in September of 2020. Although it may have been sucked into a rush for crypto and suffered from shortages, it was still a great value card for what it could achieve. The RTX 4070 Ti Super has a release date of January 2024. Coming in the midst of the Super upgrade for the Ada range, it improves upon what was already there and provides a better choice. Comparing the 4070 Ti Super vs 4070 Ti we already see what changes there, but what about compared to the previous generation’s choice of GPU?

First, we compare the RTX 4070 Ti specs against the 3080s. It’s not a one-to-one comparison as the 3080 came in an older generation where the process and architecture were different. Where it was still from Samsung 8nm, instead of the now TSMC’s 5nm. That’s where we see the CUDA core count not changing too much, as even though the 4070 Ti Super is on a smaller AD103 GPU it has 8,448 CUDA cores whilst the bigger GA102 in the 3080 has 8,704.

That is one of the likely differences in performance and efficiency, which is where the clock rate comes in too. The base and boost clock get an upgrade across the generations too, as the 4070 Ti Super tops 2.61 GHz and has a base faster than the 3080s boost. Even an overclocked pick won’t reach these levels.

For the memory, there is plenty of improvements across generations. Although it only improved with the Super, the 70 Ti has 16GB of GDDR6X instead of the 10GB in the 3080. However, the 80 model opens up the full potential with its bus and bandwidth in the memory. As it features a 320-bit bus and clocked at 19Gbps it produces a bandwidth of 760.3GB/s. Whereas the 70 Ti has a 256-bit bus at 22Gbps giving a bandwidth of only 716.8GB/s. The last improvement is also in the power, and the graphics power falls down to 285W from 320W saving you power in usage.

How much better is the 4070 Ti Super than 3080?

Now with the reviews out for the RTX 4070 Ti Super, there are plenty of comparisons we can look at to see how much the performance has changed. In general, we see that the 4070 Ti Super flourishes and improves greatly upon the previous generation. Even though it is a lower-tier model, the general improvements in architecture and the rest of the specs provide a good insight as to why that may be.

There in its 25-game average, the Ti Super gets 177.8 FPS at 1080p, 137.5 at 1440p, and 80.8 at 4k. Whilst the RTX 3080 achieves 139.1, 106.1, and 63.6 FPS respectively. That means that the 4070 Ti Super is 27-30% better on average.

How much cheaper is the 4070 Ti Super than 3080?

As the name and tier of the model is lower you would expect the RTX 4070 Ti Super to be the cheaper out of the two. But the newer generation does up the cost of the GPU. The RTX 4070 Ti Super has a launch price of $799, whereas the RTX 3080 has an MSRP of $699. That means the 4070 Ti Super is in fact 14% more expensive than the 3080. But you do get a great performance and card for it.

Is the 4070 Ti Super worth it over 3080?

In general, when comparing the 4070 Ti Supe vs 3080, we find that the newer choice is certainly worth it over the Ampere card. With a much great performance for a slight increase in price. The FPS improvement is double that of how much it costs if you get it at the recommended price. Additionally, you can get the features and efficiency brought by the Ada generation including the addition of DLSS 3 which can provide some great additions as well. In general, it provides a lot more for a slightly higher price but should last you that much longer.
