The brand-new Radeon RX 7900 XT and Radeon RX 7900 XTX, AMD’s newest high-end GPUs built employing several scalable “chiplets” constructed on a 5nm process and based on the all-new RDNA 3 architecture, have been announced.

Starting on December 13, both will be available globally. The new Radeon RTX 7900 XTX competes with Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4000 series and has 96 compute units, a clock speed of up to 2.3GHz, and 24GB of GDDR6 VRAM. 355W is the total board power consumption rating.

The card supports DirectX 12 Ultimate and is constructed using a 5 nm process based on the Navi 31 graphics processor in its Navi 31 XTX variant. This guarantees that Radeon RX 7900 XTX will be able to run all current games.

Future video games will include hardware ray tracing, variable-rate shading, and other features thanks to the DirectX 12 Ultimate capabilities.

RX 7900 XTX specs

A big device, the Navi 31 graphics processor, has 58,000 million transistors and a die area of 306 mm². It has 192 ROPs, 384 texture mapping units, and 6,144 shading units.

Ninety-six acceleration cores for raytracing are also on the GPU. The Radeon RX 7900 XTX and 24 GB GDDR6 VRAM from AMD are connected through a 384-bit memory interface.

The AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX is three and a half slots thick and uses two 8-pin power connectors, with a maximum power draw of 355 W. There are three display outputs: one each of HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.1, and USB Type-C.

PCI-Express 4.0 x16 links the Radeon RX 7900 XTX to the rest of the system. The card has a triple-slot cooling system; its dimensions are 287 mm x 135 mm x 50 mm.

As a result of new AI instructions and increased throughput, AMD claims that ray tracing is now 50% faster than it was with the previous generation.

New AI accelerators have been introduced to each compute unit (CU), and various stages of the graphics pipeline can now operate at multiple clock rates. Additionally, add units can now dual-issue instructions.

At that time, it is expected that additional performance details, including competitive positioning against Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4000-series products and the new Intel Arc GPUs, will be revealed.

RX 7900 XTX size FAQs

What are the RX 7900 XTX dimensions?

The reference card for the RX 7900 XTX has dimensions of 287 mm x 135 mm x 50 mm. Making it a 2.5-slot thickness and more convenient to fit in. Although a custom card will likely be bigger. Such as the ASUS TUF coming in at 352.9 x 158.2 x 72.6 mm.

Do I need a new case for the 7900 XTX?

If you’ve already got a decently sized GPU then you most likely won’t need a new case. The 7900 XTX is only 287mm long and is 2.5 slots thick. Which is a standard fit for most cases.

Although a custom card will come in a bigger size and might not be as easy to fit. Although the TUF model is 363 mm long and 72.6mm thick so you have to check your case specs to ensure fit but it should be fine in most cases.
