Looking forward to playing in the wizarding world, then you have some performance considerations. And there may be a saving grace, with the ability to double Hogwarts Legacy PC performance with DLSS or FSR.

There have been some Hogwarts Legacy driver issues, but they are a bit on and off on who they affect. With some fixes going around already, there is a lot to try out there to get going.

But even without any issues, the performance has been tough on many systems. No matter how much hardware you’re packing and we’ve seen it too.

Even as the bigger and better choices of GPUs have come out, even the older picks not holding up. So you have to find the best settings for Hogwarts Legacy PC and enjoy it.

How to improve Hogwarts Legacy performance with DLSS, FSR, or XESS

Even if you’re running an RTX 4090 or, like us an RTX 3080, you’d expect good performance at 4k. As both cards have the support and promise behind them.

Yet at 4k ultra, our RTX 3080 was barely averaging 60 FPS. Which isn’t something we’d expect from such a strong card. And we can see that with other users online saying that the game is poorly optimized. With Hogsmeade in particular causing stuttering and bad performance.

Turning down the settings right down to low overall did bump that up to 80 so it is a good help. However, with such hardware, you shouldn’t need to compromise but for some, even 60 is too low to enjoy, with 144 Hz being a much smoother experience.

So to try and improve that across many games, upscaling technology has been introduced. One of the selling points of many new cards is the ability to improve what they can achieve.

There is DLSS, FSR, and XESS. Nvidia’s, AMDs, and Intel’s (respectively) solutions to getting higher framerates. These render the game at lower resolutions and upscale it with AI or not to improve performance at some cost to quality.

They are what some games may fall back on to give a better performance than by standard. And it can be seen, as ray tracing further knocks down the performance to just 30 FPS at 4k Ultra. And turning on DLSS onto balanced will let you double the performance.

With our framerate on the RTX 3080 jumping from just 30 FPS to a much smoother 64 FPS. Meaning it can be enjoyed and less likely to see the drop in quality unless you look really closely.

The same can be done with the other options, such as FSR and XESS. Each doing it in a different way. But all offer different amounts. So you can choose how much more framerate over quality you want, and you can adjust it to your needs.

But it is annoying to see some games rely on this rather than optimize and improve raw performance. And it’s sad to see our older hardware begin to struggle to keep up.

FAQs

Can I use DLSS on any GPU?

No, DLSS is restricted to what GPUs it can be used on. With DLSS only available to Nvidia RTX GPUs, so only one company and only 3 generations old. Whilst the newer DLSS 3 and frame generation are locked to just the RTX 40 series ADA GPUs. So if you don’t have one of those you have to look at the other choices.

Can I use FSR on any GPU?

Yes, unlike Nvidia, AMD allows any graphics card to utilize its upscaling technology. So anyone can take advantage of it as it doesn’t utilize any proprietary hardware, and it gets improved ever few years. So it does also have the drawback of lower quality, but it has been improving with the like of FSR 2 and beyond.

What is the drawback of using upscaling tech?

Although these are a great option to improve your framerates, there is some drawback to using them. As they render the game at a lower resolution and upscale it there will be some quality loss in them. This was predominantly visible in earlier versions like the initial ones. Or when you chose the lower options like performance. But they have been improving and might not bee too noticeable most of the time.

Will Hogwarts Legacy perfromance improve?

The game is constantly being updated after release. And so you can expect the game to be updated and performance improved. Even with the upscaling tech, there are still improvements to be made with the base game. Especially with the shader optimization and caching. Which should eventually lead to performance.
