The convention for measuring screen size is to do so diagonally and to quote it in inches. You can either measure from the top-left corner to bottom right or the other way round. When doing so, ignore the surrounding bezels and only measure the part of the screen which actually shows an image when switched on. The same applies when measuring the height or width.

Note that two laptops can both measure the same diagonally but have different heights and widths – one could be wider but shorter, and another narrower but taller.
