It looks like rumors that several of the upcoming NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3000-series GPUs will feature a meaty 12-pin power connector wasn’t just fanciful speculation. Multiple sources have come forward in the past day or so with not just confirmation but supporting evidence in the form of pictures of what appears to be a power supply cable adapter.

Dubbed the NVIDIA 12-pin PCIe Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 connector, the adapter is seemingly being manufactured by Seasonic. It sports a duo of 8-pin connectors on one extremity that covert to a 12-pin connector on the other. The Molex Micro-Fit 3.0 measures 750 mm, and requires a massive 850 W or more PSU as indicated on the packaging. This particular version of the new adapter will reportedly only work with Seasonic PSUs.

The pictures came first from the Bilibili forum, reportedly posted by a Seasonic employee. They feature the cable itself alongside Seasonic-branded packaging. VideoCardz reports that according to manufacturer Seasonic the cable is merely for testing. German tech outlet HardwareLuxx followed up with yet more pictures, confirming it is already in possession of the connector, presumably in anticipation of the GeForce RTX 3000-series GPUs, which raises questions about Seasonic describing the adapter as used for testing only.

HardwareLuxx editor Andreas Schilling posted a further picture on Twitter, showcasing the 12-pin connector alongside a standard 8-pin connector on a GPU for the sake of comparison. According to the picture, the 12-pin connector is roughly identical in width to the 8-pin variant and thinner to boot.

According to previous rumors, the new 12-pin connectors will only be required for the top of the line Founders Edition versions of the GeForce RTX 3000-series GPUs. NVIDIA will reportedly include their own version of the adapter with Founders Edition GPUs. Custom AIB variants will reportedly stick to the two or three 8-pin connector arrangement. If true, this should reassure more than a few would-be buyers – the 850 W PSU requirement should only apply to the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti/3090.

It’s worth noting that this flurry of activity doesn’t guarantee that NVIDIA’s next-gen GPUs will feature the new power connector arrangement, nor would it be wise to blindly expect as much, but this all lines up rather tidily with previous rumors. Fortunately, we really don’t have all that long to wait to find out. NVIDIA’s Ultimate Countdown wraps up a week from now on August 31st – the GPU giant is widely expected to announce its lineup of Ampere GeForce RTX 3000-series GPUs at the end of the 21 day tease.
