5 Best Upcoming Open World Games

One of the greatest parts about being a gamer is that there is always something new and exciting on the horizon. With technology ever-expanding, we look forward to future releases to see just what can be achieved by pushing our current hardware to its limits.

Open world games are a perfect example of this. Often having huge, detailed worlds to explore and countless activities and side quests to pick up, they are a great way to push your system to its limit.

Here, we’ll be looking at five of the most anticipated open-world games due to be released soon. While a lot of these games have release dates announced for them, a lot of these titles have experienced delays in development.

Release Date: 19 November 2020

Originally teased all the way back in 2013, Cyberpunk 2077 has had a long development fraught with delays. The most recent release date we have to look forward to is 19th November 2020 when we’ll be able to finally get our hands on it.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world RPG set in the sprawling megalopolis of Night City. Players will control a mercenary named V who sets out on a quest to find an implant that is said to be the key to immortality.

We can’t wait to start exploring the world of Cyberpunk 2077 and from what we’ve seen in gameplay teasers so far, it looks pretty exciting. The city itself looks to heavily draw inspiration from settings seen in Blade Runner and Akira. Neon signs and robotics dominate the landscape

With CD Projekt Red already creating one of the most immersive open worlds in The Witcher 3, we’re sure there’s going to be plenty to see and do in Night City when it releases this November.

Assassin’s Creed has gone through quite a change with its last two releases. Gone are the days of exploring a city at a time, in the last two games you have a whole detailed world to make your way through.

In Assassin’s Creed Origins you were able to explore a vast Egyptian world which included exploring tombs and traversing the dangers of the Nile. The followup game Assassin’s Creed Odyssey mapped the Ancient Greek lands and included wonders such as the Agora of Athens and The Parthenon.

The latest game in the series is set to explore the Viking invasion of Britain during the 9th century. While we’re not sure what historical landmarks we’ll spot this time around, we are looking forward to exploring a 9th century Britain. As the series prides itself on historical accuracy, we’re sure there will be plenty to see and learn on our travels.

In Assassin’s Creed Valhalla you’ll journey from Norway towards Britain to settle down and start a new life. Not much is known about the story so far but it looks like you’ll be tasked to try and forge a settlement in Britain and no doubt encounter a lot of trouble along the way.

Finally finding its feet after the unsuccessful launch of the first Watch Dogs game, this series has evolved into a great open-world game that features highly detailed cities to explore. In the past, players have been able to explore Chicago and San Francisco and in Watch Dogs: Legion you’ll make your way through London.

This won’t be the London you know and love though, this near-future rendition of London will speak more to Orwell’s vision of 1984 than we currently see today. You’ll play a part in the Resistance as they aim to take back a version of London that is close to ruin. During gameplay you’ll be able to explore the vast city, engaging in the usual hacking activities that you are used to.

What will make this city feel alive is that every civilian you see will have their own backstory, personality, and skill set and can be potentially recruited to your cause. This allows you to form bonds with characters you’d usually ignore or use as target practice and you can even customize them as you see fit.

Another game on our list that has been an unfortunate victim of delays is Gods & Monsters. This open-world game allows you to play as a long-forgotten hero with the aim to save the Greek gods from disaster.

We haven’t seen too much of the open-world in this game, but from the trailer, it looks like it will be vibrant and breathtaking. As Gods & Monsters is created by the same team who brought us Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, we’re hoping that their prior experience in creating a detailed Greek world passes over to this title.

Gods & Monsters is listed as a story-book adventure which should mean that we’ll see some of our favorite Greek gods and monsters come to life. You’ll wield the power of the gods and face off against these monsters on your journeys both on the land and in the air.

The zombie craze seems to have died down a bit in the last few years, but that won’t stop us from getting excited about the follow up to the excellent Dying Light released back in 2015. This survival horror game had an immersive open-world that was great to explore through the fluid parkour system.

Dying Light 2 follows on from the events of the first game and introduces Aiden Caldwell, a survivor of the zombie infection whose exceptional agility and combat skills make him a valuable ally in the post-infection world.

The vast open city is yours to explore and looks even larger than the last game. Your parkour skills make exploration feel seamless as well as proving to be a valuable asset for escaping the hordes of undead. You’ll want to stay out of the shadows to avoid the zombies, however, which we’re sure will lead to some tense moments during gameplay.

Dying Light 2 doesn’t have a set release date at the time of writing and has suffered from a couple of delays over the last year. We’re hoping to finally see this title either late 2020 or early 2021.

With a lot of games being delayed recently, it’s good to take a moment to appreciate some of the great games that are up and coming. While we may not see a couple of these until 2021, it still looks like we’ll have a great year for gaming if you’re a fan of open-world exploration.
