AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3980X Leaked But Is It Real?

There’s a rumor floating around at the moment which suggests that AMD is working on a new Ryzen processor with 48 cores.

What Does The Leak Suggest?

According to the leak, this processor is a Ryzen Threadripper 3980X and features 48 cores. This would seemingly fill the gap between the 64 core Threadripper 3990X at the top of the range and the 32 core Threadripper 3970X. However, the Threadripper 3980X has never been confirmed despite previous rumors.

The latest leak appeared in a Tweet from @NPCdes0. The image appears to show some conflicting information, however.

Is It Real Or A Bad Fake?

The name in the leaked image is listed as the ‘AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3980X’ at the top. However, the specification section in the image appears to list the processer as an AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3990X instead.

As the specification section usually lists the currently installed CPU on a system, it appears this image has been doctored.

When Tom’s Hardware interviewed Robert Hallock from AMD back in January, he said that AMD had no plans for a 48 core processor at the time.

Hallock noted that with the previous generation of Threadripper processors, customers rarely chose the mid-range chip and instead went either for the budget or top of the range option.

So, it probably wouldn’t make sense for AMD to suddenly launch a mid-range 3000 chip that no one appears to be asking for. For now, at least.

Will There Ever Be A 48-Core Threadripper 3980X?

Of course, this doesn’t rule out the possibility of a 48 core Threadripper in the future. It may appear one day in the future if people start looking for a mid-range processor between the 3970X and the 3990X.

There is currently a $2,000 difference between these two processors so it would make sense – providing that there is a demand for it.

It’s also possible that AMD is strategically pushing people towards buying the more expensive chip and will only offer a mid-range one when sales for the 3990X start to drop. Again, this is all speculation but it’s interesting to think about nevertheless.

For now, it looks like we shouldn’t get our hopes up about the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3980X. If we do hear any more information about this mythical 48 core chip in the future, we will be sure to keep you updated.
