NBD shipping logs reveal that the next-gen AMD Navi 44 “RDNA 4” GPU will surprisingly be the smallest among the two rumored upcoming Radeon GPUs.
AMD is expected to reveal its next-gen series of RX 8000 GPUs based on the RDNA 4 architecture at CES 2025. The company has been keeping much of the information quite close to itself, but a new leak regarding the package size of the Navi 44 GPU has surfaced and it seems like it will be the smallest of the two RDNA 4 GPUs. We call it surprising because, in previous AMD generations, the package size got smaller as the number got larger.
For instance, Navi 21 is the largest RDNA 2 GPU, powering the Radeon RX 6950 XT, while Navi 24 is the smallest chip used in the Radeon RX 6500 XT and other lower-end models. However, this time, it appears AMD is taking a reverse approach, with the Navi 44 being the smallest and the Navi 48 being the largest RDNA 4 GPU.
According to the NBD shipping manifesto, the package size for the Navi 44 will be 29 x 29 mm. This was also noted by occasional leaker Everest (@Olrak29_ on X), who mentioned that the Navi 44’s package size would be slightly smaller than the Navi 23, which had a 35 x 35 mm size. However, this is not the smallest package size we’ve seen, as the previous Navi 24 had a size of 28 x 24 mm. Compared to that, the Navi 44 will see a 25% increase in package size.
It’s important to note that these are package sizes, not die areas. This means the die area for the upcoming chips could be similar to the previous Navi 23/22 parts. As for the Navi 48, its package size is still unknown, but it is expected to be larger, given that AMD’s Navi 21/22 and Navi 31/32 were bigger than the Navi 24 and Navi 33, respectively. Apart from the package sizes, we’re still waiting to hear more about the specifications of the next-gen RDNA 4 8000 series to see how it will compete against NVIDIA’s next-gen Blackwell trio lineup.
