Back in the day it used to be Sim City that was the premier city building game. Out of nowhere one year came Cities Skylines which surpassed recent Sim CIty games in every way imaginable. We now have rumors of Cities Skylines 2 on the horizon, though nothing is confirmed at this stage, and we are still getting high-quality DLC building out improvements for the first game.

The next such example of a fairly major addition to the base game is Airports, which is due to be released on 25th January. Besides looking amazing, in many ways this addition will bring virtually a mini airport building simulation into the game such is the detail you can go into.

AIrports will begin at level 1 which are small regional affairs, but as your cities grow you can grow your airport into huge transportation hubs, and connect them with new public transport infrastructure such as high-speed trains to serve all your newly constructed terminals and runways.

Moving between levels requires you to service a certain number of passengers. Service 500 of them for example and you airport can reach level 2.

As you grow you are going to need to develop facilities such as Airport Bus Terminals, choose what kind of buses to run on the service for maximum efficiency, and eventually turn all of this into a fully-fledged metro system.

You can check out this tutorial ahead of playing for yourself that was released in a recent dev diary.

You will obviously need the base Cities: Skylines game to get at the DLC which you can pick up on Steam from the 25th. There is no price listed as yet, which is a bit unusual, even on the official Paradox site for the game, but unless it is priced ridiculously it certainly looks like it should be worth picking up.
