The first Dead Space official teaser trailer has dropped, and we are very excited.

Whilst the developers of the original Dead Space including Glen Schofield are busy making their new sci-fi horror The Calisto Protocol, following the questionable decision of EA not to make any new games in the series, Electronic Arts have at least seen the sense in jumping on the remake bandwagon and remastering the original, and best, entry in the series.

Have a gander below to see our first glimpse of the Dead Space remake.

A Brief History Of Dead Space - What Made The Original Dead Space So Great?

Dead Space was a groundbreaking game of the horror genre – with its inventive combat, constant tension, and genuinely grotesque and terrifying moments. The creators set out to make the scariest video game of all time, and it’s certainly arguable that they succeeded.

Here are some of the ways that Dead Space reinvented the genre, and some of the gameplay elements we can expect to see in the remake, many of which still feel fresh to this day 13 years later!

  • The sound design – Every horror aficionado knows that the most important element of the genre is the sound, and Dead Space absolutely nailed it. From the blood-curdling noises of the necromorphs themselves to the unsettling echoes and groans of the semi-deserted spaceship. Even the incidental noises of Isaac’s gear, and the electronic interfaces were satisfying and iconic.
  • The immersion – Everything in the presentation of Dead Space really drew you into the experience, particularly given the game began with the natural disadvantage of having a third-person perspective; the minimal (i.e. non-existent) HUD, the visual design really alternating between the tight, claustrophobic spaces and echoey cavernous interiors of the ship, and the aforementioned sound design.
  • The combat – “Cut Off Their Limbs” is the iconic blood-smeared tip which begins the player’s combat experience in the game, and fighting the necromorphs, often being without an obvious single ‘head’ or central nervous system, was a bit more complex than the classic ‘aim for the head’. It required more thought and provided a more difficult challenge in the heat of the moment to laser cut the legs off grisly gibbering beasts with your laser cutter as they shuffled towards you.
  • The enemies – If you’ve played the game – you know – if you haven’t – I won’t spoil it – needless to say the different varieties of necromorphs are some of the most horrible foes in all of gaming.
