When NVIDIA’s highly-anticipated Ampere GeForce RTX 3000-series GPUs launch later this year, would-be owners may have more options to choose from than expected.

According to a new report published by the folks over at TweakTown, third-party custom AIB GPUs will release alongside NVIDIA’s familiar haul of Founders Edition models. TweakTown says a source shared the juicy details with them, advising that these AIB cards should launch alongside the Founders Edition variants, or shortly afterward.

Historically, NVIDIA launches its in-house FE models first, followed by a flurry of AIB models up to a few months later. A simultaneous launch of both the FE and custom variants would represent a significant departure from the usual release pace favored by NVIDIA to date.

The report stopped short of listing which third-party manufacturers would feature among the first wave of custom Ampere GeForce RTX 3000-series GPUs. A July 2020 leak, that supposedly revealed a GeForce RTX 3080 Ti ROG STRIX, suggests ASUS will feature among those earmarked to arrive alongside NVIDIA’s Founders Edition models.

Why NVIDIA would want to do this is unclear, especially considering custom AIB models would take some of the limelight away from the Founders Edition models. It may represent a strategic move to ensure it can maximize sales before the arrival of rival AMD’s ‘NVIDIA-killer’ Big Navi GPUs in late 2020.

Given that NVIDIA has yet to announce the RTX 3000-series GPUs in any official capacity, we’d suggest taking all this with a pinch of salt. However, we may not have to wait all that long to find out whether there’s any substance to this latest nugget – under three weeks to be precise.

Yesterday, NVIDIA kick-started what it calls the Ultimate Countdown via a cryptic tease on Twitter, accompanied by a banner image change that read ’21 days. 21 years,’ seemingly hinting at a sizable announcement that taps into the company’s 21 years in the GPU market in some capacity. The natural assumption is that this represents the first sign that NVIDIA is gearing up to unveil its line-up of gaming-focused Ampere GPUs on August 31st, 2020.

We’ve yet to receive firm confirmation of this, but it aligns rather comfortably with long-standing rumors of a GeForce RTX 3000-series launch in September.
