AMD’s AGESA 12.0.2a BIOS updates are now being rolled out by various motherboard manufacturers and are said to improve performance for the X3D series.
AMD recently teased its upcoming Ryzen 9000X3D series, with the 9800X3D making its flagship debut. However, motherboard vendors can no longer keep the curtains down and have already started rolling out new BIOS updates featuring the updated AGESA firmware. The latest AGESA 1.2.0.2A appears to focus specifically on the X3D series, unlike the 1.2.0.2 release, which was the final and stable firmware for the AMD X870 series. This update is expected to bring some interesting new features and optimizations for the next-gen Ryzen 7 9800X3D.

Gigabyte’s X3D Turbo Mode isn’t their exclusive feature
Gigabyte is among the first motherboard manufacturers to release the AGESA 1.2.0.2A firmware update, available for both 800 and 600 series motherboards. Additionally, the BIOS updates are said to come preloaded with Gigabyte’s X3D Turbo Mode, which was previously assumed to be a Gigabyte-exclusive feature. However, that is no longer the case, as this new feature is also part of ASUS’s latest BIOS updates based on the AGESA firmware.

What makes this feature so talked about is its expected 35% performance uplift – most of which are found in the chip’s gaming performance. It achieves this by disabling SMT (AMD’s hyper-threading) and locking operations to a single CCD. This feature will not only offer significant benefits for dual-CCD 3D V-Cache offerings but also for chips like the 9700X (a single-CCD CPU without 3D V-Cache), as users have reported promising improvements of 4.8% in Forza Horizon 5.
With that said, if you’re planning to get the upcoming Ryzen 7 9800X3D on November 7th, you should make sure to have the AGESA 1.2.0.2A firmware to maximize performance.
