The latest major update for Epic Games’ Fortnite is live now, and it’s launched with a crossover event that pulls in characters from the world of Marvel comics. As of right now, there are eight Marvel heroes and villains with skins available, and an intergalactic threat, as Galactus “Devourer of Worlds” is hurtling towards Earth. The premise seems like something straight out the pages of a comic where, not unlike Secret Wars, a bunch of heroes are teleported into a fight, with little explanation.

To me, it looks as good or even better than the upcoming Marvel Avengers game from Square Enix. It has more visually appealing depictions of these characters, with a bright and colorful comic-accurate approach to these character designs, rather than looking like an off-brand version of the MCU movies. We’ve also not heard anything to indicate that any particular character will be removed from the PC version, unlike the Avengers game.

This latest update is available for free now, on all platforms except for iOS, where Epic has decided to keep the game off the App Store because Apple won’t let them bypass the App Store payment system for things like battle passes and V-Bucks.

This isn’t the first time that the Marvel universe has crossed over to Fortnite, with Thanos having shown up back when Avengers: Endgame was in cinemas, plus events with Captain America and Deadpool having appeared in the past. Nexus War is perhaps a bigger event though, with a wide cast of characters involved. There’s Thor in his Herald of Thunder outfit, and fan-favorites like Wolverine, Storm, and Groot.

The full lineup of characters confirmed so far is:

  • Doctor Doom
  • Groot
  • Iron Man
  • Mystique
  • She-Hulk
  • Storm
  • Thor
  • Wolverine

All part of the new Battle Pass, which is available now. One particularly nice touch that caught my attention is an emote for Mystique that will shapeshift you into the last character you killed. Someone put some thought into that!

It’s perhaps best not to think too long and hard about the various narrative implications of these Fortnite cross-overs. If I start to question how can Wolverine and She-Hulk exist within the same universe at Batman and Aquaman, John Wick, Star Wars, Stranger Things, Borderlands, Travis Scott, and Major Lazer, I start to feel a little dizzy.

For those not in the know about Galactus, he’s an ancient and powerful being who travels the galaxy, searching for planets to consume. He generally sees lesser lifeforms as insignificant, and he wields the power cosmic to eliminate anything that stands between him and his next planetary meal. We’re not sure exactly what kind of in-game events Epic will have planned for the Nexus War, but with a character like Galactus in play, there’s plenty of scope for massive changes to the world.
