In a series of benchmark tests for Nvidia’s latest RTX 30-series GPUs, the RTX 3080 has managed to beat its predecessor card by a whopping 68%. This won’t necessarily map directly to a 68% improvement in real-world performance when gaming, exact results will vary depending on which features are enabled and will vary from game to game. It does give us some interesting data for comparisons though.

The folks over at Videocardz have compiled this chart, comparing the leaked benchmark results of the RTX 3080 with previous generation RTX 2080 Super and RTX 2080 Ti cards. These benchmarks are focused on CUDA performance and OpenCL performance, pretty robust tests of the computing capabilities of these cards, and a good yardstick for comparing performance across generations of GPUs.

rtx 3080 benchmark

Impressively for “Vertex Connection and Merging” we see a more than double increase in performance with the RTX 3080 versus the RTX 2080 Super, and then for the average across each of these elements of the CUDA performance and OpenCL performance benchmarks, we see a 68% improvement with the RTX 3080 versus the RTX 2080 Super.

These are not officially released benchmarks by Nvidia, rather they’ve been leaked on Compubench, but they do at least give us an idea of how the RTX 3080 will perform in real-world settings. The results will depend on a variety of factors like ambient temperature, hardware configuration, and which variant of these GPUs they are based on, plus Nvidia will still be working on the drivers between now and the release of the 30-series GPUs. We’ll be sure to bring you an in-depth analysis of these new graphics cards as soon as we’re able to get our hands on them.

In the meantime, for a look at the real gaming performance of Nvidia’s new card, Nvidia has released some footage of id Software’s Doom Eternal running on an RTX 3080, and it managed to hit some extremely impressive framerates, even rendering at 4k, with all the settings turned to max. We’ve also got a roundup of all the big headlines from Nvidia’s announcements over here, and we’re going to be regularly updating information on preorder availability for the RTX 3080 over here.
