Intel Core Ultra 9 285K benchmarks have appeared in Blender 4.2, showing promising results but failing to beat AMD’s 9950X. Could leaving the hyperthreading at home been a mistake for multithreaded workloads?

With the release of Intel’s Core Ultra CPUs right around the corner, it was only a matter of time before benchmarks started to surface. We’re pretty sure samples are already in the hands of reviewers and testers. Recently, Blender 4.2 benchmarks surfaced showing the performance prowess of Intel’s latest flagship.

Intel Core Ulltra 9 285K Blender performance

Prolific hardware leaker HXL (@9550pro) posted the discovered scores on X, showcasing the Core Ultra 9’s respectable 557-point score. This is a very respectable increase of around 50 points over Intel’s previous flagship, the 14900K.

However, the 285K market lead is thrown into question when you include AMD’s latest chips in the lineup.

As you can see, the Blender score for the 9950X almost tops out at 600, a very large increase over the 285K, but we shouldn’t all start panicking yet. It is unknown what the 285K was tested on, nor the conditions – meaning we can’t conclude that the 285K was running at its best.

This average pool of scores also includes people trying to overclock and get the best scores possible out of their chips, this means the “standard” performance is muddied slightly by above-average scores. Because we don’t have access to any of this information, it is hard to conclude, but one thing is for sure – a 50-point gap is a hard thing to close with just a motherboard swap and some faster memory.

Intel has likely placed a larger focus on gaming performance on its upcoming Arrow Lake chips, as it has on generations before. AMD was traditionally better at multi-core workloads before the big.LITTLE architecture came about on 12th gen chips – maybe, we’re going back to the good old days.
