The widely popular co-op game, It Takes Two‘s studio Hazelight Studios have announced a teaming up with DJ2 Entertainment to adapt their game for film & television. The action-adventure game was released in 2021 to critical acclaim and success. The game plays similarly to a platformers, though was specifically designed for split-screen cooperative multiplayer. The game is a mish-mash that feature mechanics and elements from all kinds of genres.

At the time of this article’s publishing, no studio or network has attached itself to the project. That being said, Pat Casey and Josh Miller, the writers of the Sonic the Hedgehog film and its sequel, has signed on for the It Takes Two screen adaptation.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game’s narrative, it follows Cody and May, a married couple with plans of a divorce. However, after telling their daughter about the news, she created two dolls who look like her parents. She then tries to fix her parents’ relationship through playing with these dolls and mocking out scenarios that could rekindle their lost flame. Through magical means, Cody and May find themselves trapped within the dolls’ bodies. Throughout the game, these two characters are forced on an unexpected journey that gradually brings them closer together as their matched desire to reach their daughter once again helps them grow closer together.

The story of rekindling saw a series of awards, including both wins and nominations in the Golden Joystick Award, The Game Awards, Game Develops Choice Awards and the 25th Annual D.I.C.E Awards.

As for how this adaptation will look on screen, until a studio or network have taken it on, will remain a mystery. It may be an animated feature or a live-action one, it could easily be a blend of both. But until further notice, all we know is that it’s got its writers and that’s pretty much it.
