Lego Sonic the Hedgehog – release date & where to buy

Yeah, this is cool. If you are an old, haggard gamer like me you grew up with Sonic the Hedgehog. And Lego. So what could be better than getting the chance to recreate Sonic’s iconic Green Hill zone in little plastic bricks and have the cat consistently knock it over and off your desk?

Nothing that’s what. And Lego designer Sam Johnson, who turned the concept into real, er toy, bricks agrees.

“Just about anyone who has enjoyed video games on any level in the last 30 years, knows and loves Sonic – and has probably sped through the unforgettable Green Hill Zone with him,”

“We have designed this set to be just as colorful and fun as the in-game version of The Green Hill Zone, then filled it with lots of easter eggs and even prizes to help fans enjoy some of their most beloved gaming icons in a brand-new way.”

The set is part of Lego’s Ideas program, where anybody can suggest an idea, and if it gets over 10,000 votes from the general public, it might be turned into reality. The Sonic set was suggested by Viv Granell from the UK. The Ideas platform has previously seen sets from Friends and Seinfeld, alongside Sesame Street and the International Space Station greenlit for production.

Iconic. The end.

Lego Sonic the Hedgehog release date

Lego will release the Sonic the Hedgehog Green Hill Zone set on its website on New Year’s Day (that’s Saturday folks) priced at $69.99 / £59.99. There is no word on how limited the run will be, but if we were you we would try and get in there early to avoid disappointment.

The set will be available at the official Lego website, and doubtless on eBay seconds later for three times the price.

What is in the Lego Sonic the Hedgehog box?

The kit is a faithful recreation of of of the screens in the Green Hill Zone. The bricks are designed to produce a pixelated style and it’s amazing how accurate it looks, as you can see from the photo above. We also get a newly redesigned minifig of Sonic alongside the 1125 pieces – there are also four other characters to build – Robotnik, Moto Bug, The Crabmeat and the Phantom Ruby.

Due to its complexity, Lego suggests the set is suitable for those over 18, so bear that in mind if you are thinking of a present for a younger gamer.
