LG G2 OLED TV: Release date, pricing, specs, latest news

LG has kicked started 2022 with a bang, unveiling a plethora of new OLED TVs that are sure to spice up the consumer display marketplace. CES offered up the stage for the LG announcements, with the brand’s popular G1 and C1 series receiving tasty updates.

The new version of the flagship TV series will be coined the G2 range and will be the company’s premium TV offering. Despite featuring many of the same features and benefits of the aging G1 panel, LG has assured us that a superior viewing experience is on the cards.

While this all sounds great, keen fans of the LG TV lineup still haven’t received any concrete statement regarding release dates and price. Fortunately, we’ll be keeping on top of all the latest news and press releases to ensure you don’t miss a beat with one of this year’s best OLED TVs.

LG G2 release date: What we know so far

Unfortunately, at the time of writing this, we don’t have a concrete release date for the LG G2 series. However, we do know it’s going to be after the release of the C2 range – which, according to a John Lewis pre order page, could be in your living room in the next 5 weeks.

Insiders suggest that a release date around spring is to be expected for the LG G2. However, with the last 24 months offering huge issues in the manufacturing process, we’ll take that with a pinch of salt for now.

LG OLED G2 specifications

As far as specifications go, there isn’t a huge amount of difference between the LG G1 and G2. With that in mind, LG states that the improvements made to the G2 should provide a superior viewing experience – for both everyday users and gamers.

The main improvement straight off the bat is the new Gen 5 Alpha 9 processor that the G2 will offer. With the brand’s next-gen processor, the G2 range should deliver much better upscaling in order to eliminate extra steps when increasing to 4K resolution.

Both the G2 and C2 models will feature dynamic tone mapping (with 10 times the number of sampling blocks), an increased HDMI 2.1 interface (now featuring 48Gbps), and ALLM and VRR for 4K @ 120Hz gameplay.

Performance

Alongside a newly tweaked processor and some cool game mode changes, the main improvement you’ll see when comparing the G1, C2, and G2 TVs is the brightness. LG states that the G2 is the brand’s brightest OLED TV – delivering over 20% more brightness when compared to its predecessor.

Furthermore, the G2 will now feature an additional heat dissipation layer (similar to that of Sony’s A90J) to aid in the additional luminance found in both peak and average nit regions.

LG G2-Series: Sizing

As far as sizes go, we do have a pretty good idea of what’s to be expected in the G2 series.

While the G2 will match all the G1 sizes, users can also expect two new larger sizes – ranging from 55 inch to 97 inch, respectively.

LG G2 potential price

Like the C2, there’s also little information to suggest the pricing of the G2 TV series. Having said that, John Lewis’s pre order page for the C2 saw an increase in price (when comparing the C1 and C2 launch prices).

If that trend is to mirror onto the G2 range, we can expect some pretty highly-priced TVs this spring.

More recent news has leaked suggesting the prices of the entire LG 2022 OLED TV range, including the G2 in various sizes. While we’ll be taking this numbers with a pinch of salt, it’s definitely alarming to see the increase over the G1 launch prices:

Should you buy the LG G2 when it releases?

So, there you have it, everything we currently know about LG’s new G2 range of TVs. The big question left to answer is, should you buy the LG G2 upon its release?

Well, that’s a tricky one – mainly because the C2 looks like a really attractive prospect this year. The only real improvements over the C2 are a much brighter Evo OLED panel and some intricate processor/ features changes.

I suppose it all comes down to the price and whether or not you want a smaller or larger panel (as the G2 peaks at 97 inches). Either way, whether you buy the C2 or the G2, you’ll be getting an incredibly powerful TV that will likely end up being one of the best of 2022.
