Mortal Kombat 12 leak – real or are they playing with us?

There is something fishy about this. When is a leak not a leak?

When is a leak a teaser? And when are they any less annoying? NetherRealm producer Jonathan Andersen tweeted an image of his desk covered in MK memorabilia and photographs. In the corner of his screen there was a single file name – “MK12_Mast” – okay so was this a genuine faux pas or part of an elaborate tease?

Either way, the photo has now been removed – which again is no proof that it is a legitimate leak and Anderson is not just playing with us. The tweet lasted just 10 minutes before being shot down, just long enough for the internet to do its detective work. Adding further clues that this may be an elaborate ruse is a partially visible email suggesting that MK fans constantly trawl the internet looking for information. Hmmm.

Rumors have been around of a MK 12 since the middle of last year, and as we are already 11 deep into the series, let’s face it, it would hardly be a massive shock, given how much of a cash cow the franchise has become, especially with its DLC.

The image above, culled from the original deleted tweet, shows the offending section of the screen that has caused all the furore. You can’t see it with the naked eye and you will need to zoom in in the likes of Photoshop. That’s why it all just seems so, well mysterious. It’s almost too perfectly positioned in the frame, and NetherRealm does have history with teasers around other titles.

So we are taking this one as deliberate. If not, we would love to see the email that got sent to Andersen this morning from his bosses.

With Mortal Kombat 11 having got to the point now where it is freely available on game services such as Game Pass and PlayStation Plus there is no doubt the time could be ripe for the announcement of a new game while the fighting classic’s player base has been reinvigorated.

We expect the MK 12 announcement immenitly – unless, unless it was real?
