AMD is preparing a new version of one of its Ryzen 4000 Renoir mobile processors according to benchmark details.
According to hardware leaker @TUM_APISAK, 3DMark benchmark results have been discovered for a “Ryzen 7 Extreme Edition”. This appears to be a mobile processor and part of the Renoir line.
What Are the Specifications of the Ryzen 7 Extreme Edition Chips?
The Ryzen 7 APU appears to have eight cores and 16 threads with a base clock of 1.8 GHz and a 4.3 GHz boost clock. Given that the base clock is fairly low, it looks like this APU will be based on one of the Ryzen 4000 U-series which runs with a TDP of 15 W.
Currently, there are two Ryzen 7 SKUs in the Renoir series but only the Ryzen 7 4800U has 8 cores and 16 threads. Based on that information, it looks like this mystery APU will be based on that processor.
While the 4800U has a base clock of 1.8 GHz and a boost clock of 4.2 GHz, the Extreme Edition will come with almost an extra 100 MHz boost clock.
Another discovery by @TUM_APISAK was a Ryzen 9 4900U which appears to have the exact same specifications as the Ryzen 7 Extreme Edition.
What Will These Extreme Edition Chips Be Used For?
There’s a possibility that both of these new APUs have been specifically designed for use in Microsoft laptops. We know that AMD has already done something similar with custom-made APUs for Microsoft Surface devices previously.
In the case of these custom APUs, they were almost the same as the original ones but the Microsoft variant had an additional Vega Compute Unit (CU). Ryzen 3000 U-series chips maxed at 10 CUs, but the Microsoft custom-made ones reached 11 CUs.
Interestingly, when this happened in the past, the custom-made Microsoft chips were called “Surface Edition” rather than “Extreme”. So, there’s a possibility it either isn’t for Microsoft or it will be available to other companies as well. Removing the “Surface” aspect means that it won’t put off other potential customers who want a custom chip for their laptops or mobile devices.
However, these details haven’t yet been confirmed. We know that these mystery chips will appear somewhere but we don’t know when that will be or where they will end up yet. If we hear more details, we will keep you updated.
